Quakers rally in final quarter, but
come up short
September 3, 2005
RICHMOND, Ind. — Offense took center stage Saturday night as Earlham
College fell short against Rose-Hulman on Lyboult Field at Richmond
High School.
The plan for the Engineers was to play smash mouth football the
entire game and it proved to be just enough to edge the Quakers
by a score of 48-41.
Turnovers, special teams, and field position proved to be the
difference in the first half. The Engineers were better in all
three statistical categories, which allowed them to stick to their
game plan of running the football.
Earlham’s inability to stop the run
on defense added more pressure to the already highly potent offense
led by Justin Rummell
at quarterback, who completed 28-of-42 passes for 368 yards, four
touchdowns, and two interceptions. The senior now has 43 career
touchdown passes, which moves him closer to the school record of
45 established by Mark Thompson from 1993-1996.
Being that this offensive shootout lead to
almost 90 points and almost 900 total yards of offense between
both teams, Earlham head
coach Gerry Keesling had this to say after the game: “It
was exciting. Have you ever seen a game where both teams convert
seven out of seven fourth down conversions?”
It was those
types of conversions that led the Quakers back from a 41-21 deficit
the Engineers built by the 4:20 mark of the third
quarter. Earlham scored 20 unanswered points in the final period
to make it 41-41 with 6:56 remaining in the game.
Rose-Hulman scored the winning touchdown with 1:23
left on a 1-yard run by Charlie Key, who ran for 190 yards and
five scores.
Noteworthy efforts were turned in on defense by senior linebacker
Michael Thompson and sophomore tackle Evan Williamson, who had
eight and seven tackles respectively. Sophomore Terrel Brown also
chimed in with an interception as the second quarter came to a
close.
Earlham’s top receiver was a sophomore Joe White who ended
up with eight receptions for 126 yards and two touchdowns. After
the game Joe said the following: “If we come out energized,
fired up, and ready to play, it is going to be hard to stop us…we
are too powerful.” Both White and Keesling agreed the slow
start on offense and defense put the team in a tough position going
into halftime.
Manny Myers made his debut as the starting
running back for the Quakers and has a stellar performance. Myers
finished with 16 rushes
for 126 yards and two touchdowns, while showing his versatility
and assisting Rummell in the passing game and came up with two
crucial third down receptions on screen passes totaling 35 yards. “It
has always been in me to run like that,” Myers said. “There
is a lot of potential. If the offensive line keeps dominating and
making holes, I will hit them.”
Earlham falls to 0-1, while Rose-Hulman is 1-0.
The Quakers return to action next week at home against Manchester
at M.O. Ross Field
beginning at 1p.m.
