Record setting day as Quakers
edge Manchester 69-62
September 10, 2005
RICHMOND, Ind. — The Earlham College offense was
unconscious Saturday piling up the numbers as the Quakers defeated Manchester
College
69-62 on M.O. Ross Field as the teams combined to set a NCAA Div.
III national record for total points in a game.
Justin Rummell (Ingalls, IN/Pendleton Heights) had
perhaps the greatest passing game of his illustrious college career
finishing 22 of 28
for 476
yards,
seven
touchdowns,
and an interception. While adding an 18-yard rushing touchdown to
his afternoon, Rummell broke the Earlham career touchdown passing
mark
of 45 and
now has 50. He also added school records for the most touchdown passes
and
yards
passing in a game. "My
offensive line did a great job and the receivers were open, which
made it easy
for me," Rummell said. "The big interceptions
by the defense at the end of the game also helped with the team's
success."
The 131 points by both teams breaks the old mark
of 129 set in 2003 when Coe defeated Cornell College 66-63. Two other
Earlham school records
fell as Carlos Bustamante (Indianapolis, IN/Broad Ripple) booted
nine extra points and the teams combined for 1,215 total yards. "It's
a shame that someone had to lose this game because I thought both
teams
played
hard," Earlham
coach Gerry Keesling said.
Earlham had several stand out receivers. Sophomore
Joe White (Richmond, IN/Richmond) was the go-to guy and ended up
with seven receptions totaling 196 yards
and two touchdowns. First year speedster Chris Owens (Ft. Thomas,
KY/Highlands) quietly added four receptions for 133 yards and three
touchdowns. Junior
James
Jewell (Gary, IN/Roosevelt) also contributed to the Quaker effort
with three receptions for 68 yards and two touchdowns. "We were
successful because of what Manchester was doing in the secondary
with coverages," Keesling
said.
With nine rushes for 166 yards and a touchdown,
Manny Myers (Fairmount, IN/Madison-Grant) is more than ahead of
the pace to break Earlham’s
all time rushing record in a season, which is 893 yards set by
Darrian Story in 2000. In two games, Myers has 25 rushes
for 292 yards and three touchdowns for an average of 11.68 yards
per carry.
Although the Quaker defense struggled at times with
being on the field for over 40 minutes because Earlham's offensive
efficency, senior Michael Thompson (Riverview, FL/East Bay) and sophomore
Brad Remsburg (Lafayette,IN/McCutcheon) led the
team in tackles with 10 each.
First-year Drew Hosier
(Gas City, IN/Mississenewa) had an
85-yard interception return for a touchdown, while first-year
Colin McCullough (Gary, IN/Hammond Noll) and sophomore Terrel Brown
(Richmond,
IN/Richmond)
also had interceptions for the Quakers.
The Quakers began their offensive dominance in the first quarter
by jumping out to a 14-0 lead thanks to a 53-yard touchdown reception
by Jewell and a 29-yard TD catch by White.
The two teams exchanged touchdowns through the
second and third quarter with the Quakers maintaining a 55-41 advantage.
In Manchester’s
attempt to keep the game close, quarterback Joe DeCraene went to
top receiver Brandon Tugman, who finished with 15 receptions for
164 yards and three scores.
Manchester finally tied the game 55-55 when Tugman caught a four-yard
touchdown pass from DeCraene with 3:52 left in the fourth quarter.
After a Quaker turnover, Tugman then picked up his third touchdown
reception of the day with 3:04 remaining.
On a bad ankle, Rummell then hobbled on the field
for two final plays of the day, both resulting in touchdown passes.
One was a 67-yard
bomb to White at the 2:48 mark and another 44-yard lob to Owens with
1:44 left. "I couldn't have taken Rummell out, if I had wanted
to,"
Keesling said of his quarterback. "Justin is a tough cookie.
He has great awareness and reads coverages really well."
Brown’s interception finally spelled doom
for the Spartans and the offense came back onto the field one
last time to kneel
and run out the clock. "We'll enjoy this win for 24 hours and
then get ready for Anderson," Keesling said.
With this outcome, the Quakers improve to 1-1, while
Manchester falls to 1-1. Earlham will be in action again next when
they play
at Anderson
on Saturday beginning at 1:30 p.m. Box
score.
