Injuries plague Quakers in loss at Wabash
September 24, 2005
CRAWFORDSVILLE, Ind. — Injuries and five turnovers played a
big role on Saturday in Wabash's 50-2 North Coast Athletic Conference victory
over Earlham College at Hollett
Little Giant Stadium.
Health has been a concern
of the Quakers thus far this season. After losing all conference
senior quarterback Justin Rummell (Ingalls, IN/Pendleton
Heights),
senior linebacker
Dan Coletta (Norwalk, OH/St. Paul), sophomore defensive tackle
Evan Williamson (Fountain City, IN/Northeastern), sophomore receiver
Wade Montgomery
(Indianapolis,
IN/Decatur Central), junior defensive end Brandon
Mock (Winchester,
IN/Winchester) and junior receiver/quarterback James
Jewell
(Gary, IN/Roosevelt) before or during Saturday's match up, injuries
have become a pressing issue for the Quakers. "It's tough
because our kids work hard," Earlham defensive line coach
Nick Johnson said. "We will continue to work hard and do
what we can with whomever is healthy."
Wabash (3-0, 1-0)
started the game with a drive that lasted 10:23 to go up 7-0.
After the teams exchanged punts, the Quakers committed their
first turnover on a missed handoff late in the opening period.
Wabash
eventually led 28-0 at halftime. The Quakers had a team safety
midway through the third
quarter to make it 28-2, while Wabash scored following three
of Earlham's turnovers.
Jewell started at quarterback
in place of Rummell and finished 8 of 16 for 100 yards with
one interception and a
fumble before
injuring
his
ankle in early third quarter. First-year Randy Kerns
(West Manchester, OH/National Trail) relieved Jewell and
completed 2 of 7 passes for 13 yards and three interceptions,
one of which was returned for a 23-yard touchdown.
Earlham's
top receivers were senior Mike Keesling (Richmond, IN/Richmond),
who had three grabs for 45 yards, while senior Derreck Parkevich
(Logansport, IN/Logansport) caught three passes for
26 yards.
With inexperience at quarterback
and poor field position, the Quakers were only able to muster 158
total yards of offense.
Similar to other games this season, Earlham's opponents
have controlled the field position and the time of possession
battles."We need to get the defense off the field
on third down and we need convert third downs on offense," Earlham
coach Gerry Keesling said.
Sophomore Terrel Brown (Richmond,
IN/Richmond) led Earlham's defense with 10 tackles, while junior
John Darden (Gary,
IN/Hammond Noll)
and junior Kenny Kincy (Kokomo, IN/Kokomo) had eight each.
Earlham (1-3, 0-1) returns
to action next Saturday as the Quakers travel to Hiram
College. The NCAC contest
against
the Terriers
(0-3, 0-0) starts at noon. Box
