Hiram edges Earlham in a hard-fought defensive battle
October 1, 2005
HIRAM, Ohio — An interception and Earlham
College not converting on fourth down in six attempts on Saturday, Hiram College
gained
enough of an advantage to come away with a 7-2 homecoming win
in a North Coast Athletic Conference contest.
It was the first victory for Hiram (1-3, 1-0) in 14 games at Charles
A. Henry Field.
After the two teams exchanged punts through
out the second half, first-year quarterback Randy Kerns (West
Manchester, OH/National Trail) on Earlham’s
final drive eventually completed a 40-yard pass to junior Jeremy
Hosier (Gas City, IN/Mississenewa). Hosier was
tackled at the 2-yard line with less than a minute remaining to set
up a first and goal situation.
The Hiram defense made a goal-line stand led
by defensive back Greg Mitchell, who knocked down two passes on
the final series and had
five pass breakups for the game. “We went 0 for 6 on fourth
down conversions and had three opportunities inside the five and
came up with zero points,” Earlham head coach Gerry Keesling
said. “Our defense played well only giving up one score, but
the offense completely struck out.”
The Quakers did, however, improve statistically
on offense from last week accumulating 291 yards, but they were
unable to put the
ball in the end zone. Earlham’s defense contributed to the
effort with their stingiest performance all year, holding the Terriers
to 194 yards of total offense and one touchdown. Junior Kenny Kincy
(Kokomo, IN/Kokomo) led the Quakers with seven tackles. Earlham was
credited
with a team safety just before the Quakers last possession.
Kerns made his first collegiate start for the
injured senior Justin Rummell (Ingalls, IN/Pendleton
Heights) and went 15 of 30 for 178 yards with the
one interception that proved
to be the opportunity Hiram was waiting for. “It was rough,” Kerns
said. “My inexperience hurt us and I would have liked to have
won.”
Replacing an all-conference quarterback is difficult. “Randy
completed 50 percent of his passes,” Keesling said. “He
is getting better every week and will be a good quarterback in the
future. He is being asked to do something that is hard for a first-year,
but he is handling it very well.”
Sophomore Manny Myers (Fairmount,
IN/Madison-Grant) led Earlham
with 14 rushes for 62 yards and five receptions for 36 yards.
The Terriers scored late in the first half to
go up 7-0 at intermission. With six seconds remaining in the second
quarter, Hiram quarterback
Trevor Henderson completed an 18-yard pass to Jason Exline for the
game’s only touchdown.
Earlham (1-4, 0-2) will be in action next Saturday
at home against Wittenberg University on M.O. Ross Field. The NCAC
contest begins
at 1 p.m. Box
