Quakers fall in North Coast Athletic Conference contest

October 8, 2005
RICHMOND, Ind. —
The Earlham College football team continued North Coast Athletic Conference play on Saturday as the Quakers battled through a 14-point first half deficit, but eventually fell 48-0 on M.O. Ross Field.

Sophomore Manny Myers (Fairmount, IN/Madison-Grant) was again the top threat for the offense finishing with 15 rushes for 98 yards and six receptions for 34 yards with one fumble.

Junior Jeremy Hosier (Gas City, IN/Mississenewa) had three catches for 34 yards for the Quakers (1-5, 0-3). “We hung in there in the first half and competed,” Hosier said. “We did lots of things well and had some minor mistakes. We fought the whole game and made positive steps towards playing hard every Saturday.”

Using two quarterbacks in place of the injured senior All-NCAC first team signal-caller Justin Rummell (Ingalls, IN/Pendleton Heights); Earlham head coach Gerry Keesling was upbeat. “We took big steps as a team,” Keesling said. “Our defense stepped up and our offense had some good things.”

Junior James Jewell (Gary, IN/Roosevelt) and first-year Randy Kerns (West Manchester, OH/National Trail) combined at quaterback for 17 of 39 for 140 yards and four interceptions. “Four interceptions and the kick return hurt us,” Keesling said. “Our quarterbacks are getting better. We missed a lot of opportunities. Depth and lack of numbers had something to do with us running out of gas.”

Leading 21-0 after a third period touchdown, Wittenberg took advantage of a mistake by Earlham’s kickoff return team as the Tigers picked up what amounted to an onside kick inside the Quaker 10-yard line. The Tigers eventually scored to make it 28-0 with two scores in under a minute.

Tristin Murray served as the staple for the Wittenberg (2-3, 2-0) rushing attack finishing with 154 yards on 22 attempts and three touchdowns. His rushing was complimented by the play of Geron Stokes and Ryan Holmes for Wittenberg at quarterback, who combined to go 15 of 25 for 247 yards with three touchdowns and two interceptions.

Sophomore Terrel Brown (Richmond, IN/Richmond) and freshman Colin McCullough (Gary, IN/Hammond Noll) each had an interception for the Quakers. Mike Thompson (Riverview, FL/East Bay) led Earlham with nine tackles.

The Quakers will be in action next Saturday at Oberlin College. The NCAC contest against Yeomen (1-4, 0-2) begins at noon. Box score
