Late touchdown hurts Quakers NCAC battle
October 15, 2005
OBERLIN, Ohio — A fourth quarter touchdown was the difference
Saturday as the Earlham College football team fell 13-10 at Oberlin College
in a North
Coast Athletic Conference
contest.
Oberlin scored early in the final
period. “They made more plays
than we did at the end,” Earlham head coach Gerry Keesling said.
The
Quakers scored in the opening quarter on a 22-yard field goal by senior
George Abdalla (Jerusalem, Palestine/Jerusalem). Oberlin took the
lead in the second quarter on a touchdown
run,
but the Yeomen missed the extra point and it was 6-3.
After Earlham blocked
an Oberlin 47-yard field goal attempt with 3:27 left in the half,
the Quakers went back in front First-year quarterback
Randy Kerns (West Manchester, OH/National Trail) found first-year
Derrick
Freshwater (Marion, IN/Marion) for an 11-yard touchdown pass to
give the Quakers a 10-6 advantage at intermission.
A fumble, missed field
goal and three stalled drives were all the Quakers could muster
in the second half. “It was a hard-fought contest,” Keesling
said. “We still didn’t convert on some opportunities.”
Kerns
finished 14 of 23 for 96 yards and one touchdown. Freshwater had
three grabs for 28 yards, while first-year Chris Owens (Ft. Thomas,
KY/Highlands) had four catches
for 23
yards. Sophomore Manny Myers (Fairmount, IN/Madison-Grant) ran for
100 yards on 23 carries. Junior Brandon Warner
(Indianapolis, IN/Ben Davis) rushed for 53 yards on five attempts.
Defensively, senior Stephen Groce
(Gary,
IN/Roosevelt) had 13 tackles for the Quakers, while senior Mike
Thompson (Riverview, FL/East Bay) added 10.
Earlham (1-6, 0-4) is back on
the road next Saturday as the Quakers visit Denison University.
