Quakers compete in NCAC contest at Denison
For Immediate Release:
October
22, 2005
RICHMOND, Ind. — A
rainy, cold and dreary Saturday afternoon played into the hands
of Denison University as the Big Red came away with a 38-7 victory
over Earlham College at Deeds-Piper Stadium.
The inability to
move the ball offensively and turnovers gave Denison too many opportunities.
In the red zone, Earlham was
scoreless in
three visits inside the Big Red 20-yard line, while Denison scored
three out of four times with two touchdowns and a field goal.
After
a scoreless first period, Denison began the second quarter with
62-yard touchdown run by quarterback Larry Cappetto, who finished
with six rushes for 82 yards. He also threw for 189 yards by
completing
12 of 25 passes. An 11-yard run by Joey Thees gave Denison a
14-0 advantage.
Sophomore Manny Myers (Fairmount, IN/Madison-Grant)
put the Quakers back in the contest with 4:13 remaining in second
quarter
with a 93-yard kickoff return for a touchdown
to make it 14-7. The Big Red responded to the return by scoring
a third touchdown of the half at the 3:02 mark on 25-yard td
pass from
Cappetto to Matt Petersen.
Denison pulled away in the third
quarter with another 25-yard touchdown pass from Cappetto to Frank
Roe with 12:05 left.
A 4-yard touchdown
run by Fred Lee with 1:34 left took the gas out of the
Quakers. “
We had good plays in spurts and are still trying to put an entire
game together,” Earlham head coach Gerry Keesling said. “Togetherness
and enjoyment of each other is a strength of this team they
want to be successful. They been hit with injury problems
due, but because
they stick together, they keep knocking them out every time
when a problem arises.”
It was a difficult day for first-year
quarterback Randy Kerns (West Manchester, OH/National Trail),
who finished 25 of
45 for 212 yards
with four interceptions. He was also
sacked three times.
On offense, the Quakers top receivers
were sophomore Joe White (Richmond, IN/Richmond) and Myers. White
finished with
five
catches for 54 yards.
Myers also hauled in five grabs for 44 yards.
Junior Vince
Milholland (Decatur, IN/Bellmont) and first-year Colin McCullough
(Gary, IN/Hammond Noll), who had seven tackles each were the top
performers for the Earlham
defense.
Senior Mike Thompson (Riverview, FL/East Bay), sophomores
Terrel Brown (Richmond, IN/Richmond) and Eric Sturgeon (Logansport,
IN/Logansport) each had interceptions.“
We played well in spurts,” Milholland said. “We are
still battling injuries and had too many letdowns. Although the
defense
needs to step it up I think the camaraderie should keep us together.”
Earlham
(1-7, 0-5) takes on Kenyon College (3-4, 3-1) in next
Saturday’s
homecoming contest on M.O. Ross Field. The NCAC game is at 1 p.m.
