Quakers finish season with NCAC loss to Allegheny
For Immediate Release:
November 5, 2005
RICHMOND, Ind. — Earlham
College’s injury-plagued football season came to an end at
M.O. Ross Field on Saturday afternoon as the Quakers said farewell
to 11 seniors. “The senior leadership and chemistry kept
us together this season,” Earlham head coach Gerry Keesling
said.
George Abdalla (Jerusalem, Palestine/Jerusalem), Carlos
Bustamante (Indianapolis, IN/
Broad Ripple), Dan Coletta (Norwalk, OH/St. Paul), Brad Franz (Miamisburg,
OH/Fairmont), Jerdson Gamble (Indianapolis, IN/Indianapolis Tech),
Stephen Groce (Gary, IN/Roosevelt), Casey Kashnig (Champaign, IL/Centennial),
Mike Keesling (Richmond, IN/Richmond), Mike Malone (Columbus, OH/Connersville),
Derreck Parkevich (Logansport, IN/Logansport), Michael Thompson (Riverview,
FL/East Bay) were in uniform for the final time as North Coast Athletic
Conference foe Allegheny College defeated the Quakers 41-0. The Quakers
finish 1-9, 0-7.
A highlight on the field Saturday
was by sophomore running back Manny Myers (Fairmount, IN/Madison-Grant)
whose 53
yards on the ground
enabled him to set a single-season rushing mark with 900 yards.
“It
is not only a testament to Manny Myers, but it is also a testament
to our whole offense to come out with a record like that,” Keesling
said. Darrian Story set the previous record of 893 yards in 2000.
Adding to Myers’ accomplishment was that both the offense
and defense battled injuries all year. “We had 21 players who
missed at least one game, which is 41 percent of our team,” Keesling
said.
Parkevich led the Quakers with five receptions, while first-year
quarterback Randy Kerns (West Manchester, OH/National Trail) completed
18 of 29 passes for 126 yards. Junior James Jewell (Gary, IN/Roosevelt)
had four catches, while sophomore Joe White (Richmond, IN/Richmond)
had three grabs.
Thompson and Groce led the Quakers on defense
against the Gators with 10 tackles each. Thompson finishes the
season with a team-leading
100 tackles. “Michael Thompson is a warrior,” Keesling
said. He gave everything he had and was part of more snaps than anyone
this season.” Groce was second on the squad with 71 tackles.
Terrel Brown (Richmond, IN/Richmond) and Drew Hosier (Gas City,
IN/Mississenewa) had an interception apiece. Brown, who led the Quakers
with five interceptions this year, also blocked his second kick of
the season on Saturday.
After a scoreless first quarter that featured
a goal-line stand by the Quakers, Allegheny scored three times
in the second period
to take a 21-0 halftime lead. The Gators added 20 more points in
the third quarter for the final margin. Box
