Quakers Open Season at Rose-Hulman

For Immediate Release
Sept. 2, 2006

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. — A late interception ended the Earlham College football team’s chance at a comeback Saturday night as the Quakers dropped their season opener 24-17 at Rose-Hulman.

Trailing by a touchdown, the Quakers (0-1) forced the Engineers (1-0) to punt to set up an opportunity for a game-tying drive from their own 35-yardline 2:50 left in the game.

Earlham moved down the field, but in the final moments senior quarterback Justin Rummell (Ingalls, IN/Pendleton Heights) had his pass picked off near the goal line and Rose-Hulman was able to run out the clock for the victory. “I was proud of the way our players played the game,” Earlham Head Coach Gerry Keesling said. “We showed great character, great competitive spirit and we battled all of the way to the end. We just couldn't overcome our turnovers.”

Earlham had five turnovers on the night, which Rose-Hulman was able to capitalize on early in the second quarter. With the contest still scoreless after one period, the Quakers forced a punt but there was fumble on the return and Rose-Hulman recovered at the one and scored on the next play.

On the following kickoff, Rose-Hulman recovered an onsides kick. The Engineers scored moments later to jump in front 14-0.

The Quakers eventually put together a 6-play, 70-yard drive to make it 14-7 at intermission as Rummell found sophomore Chris Owens (Ft. Thomas, KY/Highlands) for a 15-yard touchdown pass with 33 seconds left in the first half.

Earlham got the ball to start the third quarter, but a fumble on the second play from scrimmage gave the ball back to Rose-Hulman. “We came out 14-7 in the second half and put the ball on the ground in their territory and they take it in and score top make it 21-7,” Keesling said. “It was that kind of game. We've got to expect to score points offensively and our defense kept the game close enough that we should have been able to do that.”

The teams exchanged field goals after that with Earlham’s score coming on a 32-yard effort by first-year Max Crumley-Effinger (Richmond, IN/Richmond).

Rummell’s 32-yard touchdown pass to junior Joe White (Richmond, IN/Richmond) with 7:08 remaining in the contest brought Earlham to within a score and gave the Quakers a chance to rally.

Rummell finished the night with 28 completions in 47 attempts for 352 yards and two touchdowns. He added to his career touchdown pass record and now has 52. He also broke the career passing yardage mark of 6,810 set by John Wortham from 1989-92. Rummell now has 7,036 yards.

White grabbed nine passes for 163 yards, while Owens had six catches for 93 yards.

Junior Evan Williamson (Fountain City, IN/Northeastern) led the defense with 7½ tackles including a quarterback sack, while sophomore Kevin Buck (Franklin, IN/Franklin) added 6½ tackles. Sophomore Tilmon Clark (Winchester, IN/Winchester) had six tackles.

Earlham returns to action at Manchester College on Sept. 9. The non-conference contest begins at 1:30 p.m.
