Records Fall as Quakers Post First Victory
For Immediate Release
Sept. 9, 2006
N. MANCHESTER, Ind. — The Earlham College football team celebrated its first win of the season on Saturday as the Quakers defeated Manchester College 49-35.
It was a record-breaking day, particularly for senior quarterback Justin Rummell (Ingalls, IN/Pendleton Heights). “Last week he played good, but this week he played great,” Earlham Head Coach Gerry Keesling said. “He played like we expected him to play and more importantly, like he expects himself to play.”
Rummell completed 30-of-39 passes for 507 yards and seven touchdowns without an interception. The yardage total is an Earlham record, while the touchdown passes ties the mark Rummell set a year ago against Manchester.
Junior Joe White (Richmond, IN/Richmond) also got into the record book with 231 receiving yards and four touchdowns. The scores tied the standards receiving touchdowns and points in game with 24. White’s 13 receptions was one away from the school record.
Keesling praised the squad for its efforts, but he wants more consistency. “Our offense, defense and special teams were clicking on all cylinders, just not at the same time,” he said. “The defense played well to start off the game and on offense we put the ball on the ground twice and we had two missed field goals. When the offense started to get on track then the defense fell off its wheels. We kept letting them back in the game and we can play a lot better as a team.”
Offensively, the team racked up an Earlham game record 507 yards passing. “It starts with the offensive line,” Keesling said. “They protected Rummell extremely well and we had one sack. Joe White also had a great game this week, while Chris Owens had some inconsistency with some drops last week, but he came through this week.”
Owens (Ft. Thomas, KY/Highlands) finished with seven grabs for 198 yards and three touchdowns. On the ground, Earlham rushed for 169 yards. Junior Manny Myers (Fairmount, IN/Madison-Grant) led the way with 84 yards in 15 carries.
More Records For Rummell
Rummell established two Earlham career records on Saturday. He now has 7,606 yards of total offense and 621 completions. The total offense mark was held by quarterback Mark Thompson who had 7,474 yards from 1993-96. The old completion record was 615 set by John Wortham from 1989-92. Rummell also extended his records for touchdown passes (59) and passing yards (7,743).
Quick Start
After forcing Manchester (1-1) to punt, the Quakers (1-1) scored the first time they had the ball on a 38-yard pass from Rummell to Owens with 10:28 left in the opening period. The Spartans eventually added a score of their own and it was 7-7 at the end of the first.
In the second quarter, Rummell found White for a 71-yard score. Manchester tied it at 14-14 before Rummell hooked up with Owens again on a 60-yard scoring play to make it 21-14 at intermission.
The Rummell-Owens connection worked again at 11:35 of the third quarter to give the Quakers a 28-14 advantage.
Manchester scored to make it 28-21, but Rummell found White for an 11-yard scoring pass to put the Quakers up by two touchdowns. The Spartans finished the scoring in the third with another touchdown to make it 35-28.
In the final quarter, Rummell and White connected for scores of 26 and 34 yards to put the contest out of reach at 49-28.
Sophomore Kevin Buck (Franklin, IN/Franklin) led the Earlham defense with 8½ tackles, while Evan Williamson (Fountain City, IN/Northeastern) had 5½. “If you could take out five or six plays where we had breakdowns, the defense played pretty well.” Keesing said. “Several times, we had balls that we could have intercepted but we dropped.”
Buck and sophomore Tilmon Clark (Winchester, IN/Winchester) had interceptions, while junior Eric Sturgeon (Logansport, IN/Logansport) recovered a fumble. The Quakers were also credited with seven pass breakups.
On special teams, Keesling highlighted the play of first-year Matt Celmer (South Bend, IN/St. Joseph) on Earlham’s eight kickoffs. “Matt was in nearly every tackle,” Keesling said. “He came through.”
The Quakers entertain Anderson University next Saturday on M.O. Ross Field for their home opener. The non-conference affair starts at 1 p.m. “We going to enjoy this win for 24 hours and go back to work on Sunday and get ready for Anderson,” Keesling said. Box Score.
