Quakers Fall to Wabash in NCAC Contest

For Immediate Release
Sept. 30, 2006

RICHMOND, Ind. — Early in the Earlham College football team’s North Coast Athletic Conference contest with Wabash College on Saturday afternoon it was apparent that things were going to be difficult for the Quakers.

As a result, Wabash defeated Earlham 48-15 on M.O. Ross Field. “You don’t win the conference without having a good football team,” Earlham Head Coach Gerry Keesling said of the defending NCAC champs. “Our guys were excited and they came out and gave it their best shot, but we were tentative in everything that we did and they got up on us by 14. We are a lot better football team than we showed on Saturday.”

An interception on Earlham’s first play from scrimmage set the tone for the day as the Little Giants (3-1, 2-0) scored seven plays later to make it 7-0. Wabash added another score in the first period to lead 14-0. With two more touchdowns in the second quarter, the Little Giants were up 28-0 at intermission.

The Quakers found the end zone in the third quarter when senior quarterback Justin Rummell (Ingalls, IN/Pendleton Heights) threw a 14-yard touchdown to sophomore Chris Owens (Ft. Thomas, KY/Highlands) at the 8:48 to make it 34-6.

In the final stanza, Rummell scored on a 2-yard run with 9:57 remaining to cap a 12-play, 96-yard drive. First-year Max Crumley-Effinger (Richmond, IN/Richmond) finished the scoring with a 20-yard field goal.

Rummell finished the afternoon with 16 completions on 31 attempts for 160 yards and one score. Owens led the Quakers in receiving with seven grabs for 66 yards. Senior Jeremy Hosier (Gas City, IN/Mississenewa) had five receptions for 47 yards.

Defensively, senior Jordan Thompson (Riverview, FL/East Bay) led the Quakers with eight tackles including two behind the line of scrimmage. Sophomore Colin McCullough (Gary, IN/Hammond Noll) had 5½ tackles and one pass breakup.

Earlham (2-2, 0-1) returns to action on next Saturday at Wittenberg University. The NCAC game starts at 1 p.m. Box Score.
