Quakers Play NCAC Contest at Wittenberg
For Immediate Release
Oct. 7, 2006
SPRINGFIELD, Ohio — The Earlham College football team faced a difficult task for the second straight week as the Quakers tangled with a traditional North Coast Athletic Conference power.
Wittenberg University scored 13 points in the opening period and went on to defeat the Quakers 28-14. “Our guys battled a good Wittenberg team,” Earlham Head Coach Gerry Keesling said. “We’re not satisfied with just competing. Our guys did everything they could do to win and just came up short.”
It was the second straight loss for the Quakers after starting conference play last week at home against Wabash College.
In the second period, the Quakers started the road back after falling behind in the first quarter. Senior quarterback Justin Rummell (Ingalls, IN/Pendleton Heights) hooked up with junior Joe White (Richmond, IN/Richmond) for a 27-yard touchdown pass.
The catch was White’s ninth scoring grab this season, which ties an Earlham season record. Will Hughes established the mark in 2000. It was also the 19th touchdown pass of his career, which breaks the old standard of 18 set by Hughes from 1998 to 2001.
Wittenberg eventually led 28-7 before Rummell found another receiver for his second touchdown pass of the afternoon. Junior Terrel Brown (Richmond, IN/Richmond) caught a 22-yard toss with 3:01 left in the contest.
Rummell finished the day with 26 completions on 47 attempts for 200 yards and the two scores. White led the receiving corps with seven catches for 59 yards. Sophomore Chris Owens (Ft. Thomas, KY/Highlands) had six receptions for 43 yards.
First-year Jake Carr (Richmond, IN/Richmond) led the Quakers with 8½ tackles, while breaking up three passes. Senior Jordan Thompson (Riverview, FL/East Bay) had 7½ tackles. Junior Eric Sturgeon (Logansport, IN/Logansport) and sophomore Drew Hosier (Gas City, IN/Mississenewa) each had interceptions.
Earlham (2-3, 0-2) celebrates Homecoming next Saturday as Oberlin College visits M.O. Ross Field. The NCAC game begins at 1 p.m. Box Score.
