Quakers Battle Oberlin in Homecoming Contest

For Immediate Release
Oct. 14, 2006

RICHMOND, Ind. — A Homecoming victory wasn’t meant to be for the Earlham College football team on Saturday as the Quakers fell 41-31 to Oberlin College on M.O. Ross Field.

The Quakers fought back from an early deficit to tie the score at 24-24, but the Quakers couldn’t overcome 17 straight points by Oberlin in the second half. “We just had some breakdowns,” Earlham Head Coach Gerry Keesling said. “Oberlin is 3-0 in the conference and 4-2 overall and they’ve got a good football team. They have a running who is pretty good and we let him escape several times. Both teams battled on the field and we just came up short.”

An 80-yard run by Oberlin’s R.V. Carroll sealed Earlham’s fate. “It was really a momentum game with it swinging back and forth,” Keesling said. “Oberlin got it in the fourth quarter and never gave it back.”

With the score tied at 24-24, Oberlin scored late in the third quarter to make it 31-24. In the final stanza, The Yeomen added a field goal after a 15-play, 76-yard drive that consumed nearly nine minutes on the clock that made it 34-24. Carroll’s run made it 41-24.

Earlham scored on its opening drive with first-year Max Crumley-Effinger (Richmond, IN/Richmond) booting a 32-yard field goal, but Oberlin found the end zone twice in the first period to hold a 14-3 advantage.

After Oberlin scored to make it 21-3 early in the second quarter, the Quakers started the road back. A 5-yard touchdown run by sophomore Ben Marschand (Galveston, IN/Lewis Cass) made it 21-10. Senior quarterback Justin Rummell (Ingalls, IN/Pendleton Heights) found sophomore Chris Owens (Ft. Thomas, KY/Highlands) for a 24-yard touchdown pass with 2:08 remaining in the half to close the gap to 21-17.

On the final play before intermission, an Oberlin field goal would give the Yeomen a 24-17 lead heading in the locker room.

In the third period, the Quakers tied the contest after Rummell and senior Jeremy Hosier (Gas City, IN/Mississinewa) hooked up on a 23-yard scoring pass at the 8:37 mark. Oberlin went on the decisive 17-point run to take command.

Sophomore quarterback Randy Kerns (West Manchester, OH/National Trail) tossed a 16-yard pass to Hosier for the final score of the contest with 53 seconds left.

Rummell finished with 16 completions in 35 attempts for 208 yards and two touchdowns. Rummell’s second scoring pass of the afternoon was his 18th of the year, which broke his 2003 school record for touchdown passes in a season.

Junior Manny Myers (Fairmount, IN/Madison-Grant) led the Quakers with 159 yards rushing on 14 carries. “Oberlin was giving us a lot of opportunities to run the ball,” Keesling said. “We took advantage of that and Manny ran the ball well.”

Myers also had six receptions for 60 yards. Owens had four catches for 75 yards, while Hosier finished with three grabs for 49 yards.

Senior Kenny Kincy (Kokomo, IN/Kokomo) led Earlham’s defense with nine tackles. Senior Jordan Thompson (Riverview, FL/East Bay) and junior Eric Sturgeon (Logansport, IN/Logansport) finished with 7½ tackles each. Sturgeon also had a pair of quarterback sacks.

Earlham (2-4, 0-3) visits Kenyon College Saturday, Oct 21. The NCAC game starts at 1 p.m. Box Score.
