Quakers Fall in Overtime at Kenyon

For Immediate Release
Oct. 21, 2006

GAMBIER, Ohio — Saturday marked the second time in Earlham College football history that the Quakers needed overtime to decide a winner.

Unfortunately for Earlham, it also became the second loss in overtime as Kenyon College defeated the Quakers 33-30 in a North Coast Athletic Conference contest. “The guys played hard and just came up short,” Earlham Head Coach Gerry Keesling said.

After Earlham didn’t score on its possession in the extra session, Kenyon kicker Chad Rothschild hit the game-winning field goal. Last year, Kenyon beat the Quakers 16-13 on M.O. Ross Field with a touchdown in the first overtime game in school history.

Offensively, Earlham’s ground attack led the way against the Lords (4-3, 3-1). “We put saddle on our offensive line and they came through,” Keesling said. “All of our running backs did an outstanding job.”

Sophomore Ben Marshand (Galveston, IN/Lewis Cass) finished with 170 yards on 28 carries with two touchdowns, while junior Manny Myers (Fairmount, IN/Madison-Grant) had 151 yards in 19 attempts with one score. “They wouldn’t have had their yards if it wasn’t for (senior) Brandon Warner blocking for them,” Keesling said.

Warner (Indianapolis, IN/Ben Davis) added 25 yards for Earlham, which had a season-high 342 yards of rushing. Marshand’s total was the highest since Myers gained 201 yards against Kenyon in last fall’s Homecoming loss.

Saturday also was the first time that Earlham had two 100-yard rushers in a game since Jermel Hunt (198 yards, two touchdowns) and Darrian Story (132 yards and three scores) accomplished the feat in a 49-19 victory at Kenyon on Oct. 5, 2002.

Senior quarterback Justin Rummell (Ingalls, IN/Pendleton Heights), who was injured last week, completed three of six passes for eight yards. Saturday’s starter, sophomore Randy Kerns (West Manchester, IN/National Trail), was 3-of-5 for eight yards as the Quakers concentrated on the ground game.

First-year Jake Carr (Richmond, IN/Richmond) led the Quakers on defense with eight tackles. Senior Vince Milholland (Decatur, IN/Bellmont) and sophomore Kevin Buck (Franklin, IN/Franklin) had seven tackles each.

After Kenyon scored first, Marshand’s 13-yard run tied the contest with 4:21 left in the opening period.

Junior Terrel Brown (Richmond, IN/Richmond) gave the Quakers a 14-7 lead on a 1-yard run with 4:16 remaining in the first half. Kenyon tied the game with a score with 19 second left in the second quarter.

Kenyon scored early in the third period, but missed the extra-point to lead 20-14. Myers had a 14-yard run at 7:42 of the third to give Earlham a 21-20 advantage.

The Lords went back on top 23-20 with a field goal late in the third.

Marshand found the end zone for the second time at 14:11 of the final period to put Earlham in front. The extra point failed due to a bad snap and it was 27-23.

Later in the fourth quarter, Kenyon scored a touchdown to lead 30-27. With 27 seconds remaining in regulation, Earlham first-year Max Crumley-Effinger (Richmond, IN/Richmond) booted an 18-yard field goal to send the game to overtime.

Earlham (2-5, 0-4) returns home next week to face Hiram College. The NCAC game starts at 1 p.m. Box Score.
