Quakers Earn Conference Victory Over Hiram
For Immediate Release
Oct. 28, 2006
RICHMOND, Ind. — The Earlham College football squad got back on track Saturday as the Quakers survived the windy conditions to post a 24-16 victory over Hiram College on M.O. Ross Field.
The Quakers faced a stiff wind in the opening quarter of the North Coast Athletic Coference contest that made the offense sputter. “It was pretty windy,” Earlham Head Coach Gerry Keesling said. “It affected a lot of the things we did offensively and you just have to get better with that.”
One of the things that improved on Saturday was the defense. “The defense played together for the first time,” Keesling said. “(Defensive coordinator) Tom Parkevich did a great job. They put pressure on the quarterback and they came up with big plays.”
Earlham had five sacks, forced four fumbles and recovered two of the dropped balls. One of the fumbles came with Hiram on the Earlham 1-yard line that resulted in a touchback in the opening period.
Both teams couldn’t move the ball offensively thanks to the windy conditions in the first quarter. Earlham had four possessions with three punts and one bad snap on a punt that resulted in a 37-yard loss. Hiram had two punts and two fumbles on its first four drives of the contest.
The Quakers found the end zone on their fifth possession as senior quarterback Justin Rummell (Ingalls, IN/Pendleton Heights) found junior running back Manny Myers (Fairmount, IN/Madison-Grant) for a 28-yard touchdown pass with 45 seconds remaining in the opening stanza.
On its next possession, Hiram put together a 14-play, 45-yard scoring drive that culminated in a 32-yard field goal to make it 7-3. The Terriers then got a break recovering an Earlham fumble on the ensuing kickoff and five plays later took a 10-7 lead with a touchdown.
With the wind at their backs, the Quakers went on top 14-10 when Rummell tossed a 22-yard scoring pass to junior receiver Joe White (Richmond, IN/Richmond) with 2:54 left in the first half.
In the third period, Rummell’s 58-yard bomb to sophomore receiver Chris Owens (Ft. Thomas, KY/Highlands) was the only score as the Quakers held a 21-10 advantage heading into the final quarter. It was the eighth touchdown reception for Owens this season and 11th of his career.
First-year kicker Max Crumley-Effinger (Richmond, IN/Richmond) booted a 25-yard field goal to put the Quakers in front 24-10 with 13:39 remaining in the game. The boot was his sixth of the season, which ties an Earlham record held by All-NCAC performer Don Siler who set the standard in 1994.
The Terriers (0-8, 0-5) added a touchdown late in the contest for the final tally of the afternoon.
Rummell finished the day with 17 completions in 37 attempts for 244 yards and three touchdowns. He extended his season record to 21 touchdowns throws and his career mark to 71 scoring passes.
White’s touchdown grab gives him 10 on the season which is an Earlham record. He also extended his career mark to 20. He had two catches for 26 yards.
Senior Jeremy Hosier (Gas City, IN/Mississenewa) had six receptions for 62 yards, while Myers finished five catches for 65 yards.
Senior Brandon Mock (Winchester, IN/Winchester) led the defensive effort with nine tackles including two quarterback sacks. Senior Vince Milholland (Decatur, IN/Bellmont) also had a pair of sacks with seven tackles.
Earlham (3-5, 1-4) plays at the College of Wooster next Saturday. The NCAC game starts at 1 p.m. Box Score.
