WOOSTER, Ohio — Three touchdowns in the final quarter made the difference on Saturday as the Earlham football squad fell 38-31 to the College of Wooster in a North Coast Athletic Conference contest.
The Quakers were in front 31-17 early in the fourth period when Wooster started its rally with a 20-yard run by Dustin Sheppard with 12:32 left in the game.
On Wooster’s next possession, Sheppard scored on a 21-yard run to tie the contest at 31-31 and with 27 seconds left, he scored on a 1-yard plunge to give Wooster the victory. Sheppard finished with 190 yards and four touchdowns.
Earlham was in command most of the contest as Quakers began the day with a 16-play, 73-yard drive that consumed 6:33 on the clock. Senior quarterback Justin Rummell (Ingalls, IN/Pendleton Heights) found junior Joe White (Richmond, IN/Richmond) for a 6-yard scoring strike at 8:27.
A pair of fourth down conversions helped sustain the drive. The first came after Earlham missed a field goal attempt and first-year Chris Shaw (Anderson, IN/Pendleton Heights) picked up the ball ran six yards to allow the Quakers to resume the drive. Later in the possession, Rummell and senior Jeremy Hosier (Gas City, IN/Mississenewa) hooked up on a 5-yard pass to set up Earlham’s score.
Wooster (7-2, 4-2) quickly tied the contest at 7-7 with a touchdown at 7:19, but the Quakers responded going back on top 10-7.
After Earlham punted on its next drive, senior John Darden (Gary, IN/Hammond Noll) recovered a Wooster fumble on the Scots 44-yard line to giving the Quakers a scoring opportunity.
Earlham’s offense moved the ball to the 1-yard line and settled for an 18-yard field goal from first-year Max Crumley-Effinger (Richmond, IN/Richmond). The boot was his seventh of the season, which is an Earlham record for field goals in a season breaking the mark set by All-NCAC performer Don Siler in 1994.
The Scots responded with another touchdown on their initial possession of the second period to make it 14-10, but the Quakers would bounce back again.
Earlham grabbed a 17-14 advantage when Rummell found junior Terrel Brown (Richmond, IN/Richmond) from 10 yards out with 5:28 left in the first half. The Quakers added to their lead on a 26-yard touchdown pass from Rummell to White with 41 seconds remaining making it 24-14. Wooster’s last possession of the first half ended with Darden blocking field goal on final play.
Wooster started the second half with a 7-play, 50-yard drive that stalled when Earlham senior Jordan Thompson recovered a fumble at the 4-yard line.
Three plays later the Quakers were forced to punt and then Wooster cut the deficit to 24-17 with 6:23 left in the third quarter after a 20-yard field goal by Andrew Milligan.
After Crumley-Effinger missed a 37-yard field goal attempt, senior Kenny Kincy (Kokomo, IN/Kokomo) intercepted a Bobby Reiff pass to set the Quakers up for another score. A pass interference call kept the drive alive and Rummell eventually connected with White on a 2-yard scoring pass with 45 seconds left in the third period to give the Quakers a 31-17 advantage.
Rummell completed 32-of-54 passes for 375 yards and four touchdowns. He used five different receivers with White, Hosier and junior Manny Myers (Fairmount, IN/Madison-Grant) catching eight passes each. Hosier finished with 75 yards, while White had 71 yards and three touchdowns extending his Earlham record with 13 scores on the season and 23 in his career.
This fall, Rummell has 191 completions in 338 attempts for 2,340 yards with an Earlham record 25 touchdowns. In his career, Rummell is 754-of-1,305 for 9,024 yards and 75 scores. The 754 completions and 9,024 yards are school and NCAC records.
Myers had 55 receiving yards with 72 yards rushing. Sophomore Chris Owens (Ft. Thomas, KY/Highlands) led the Quakers in receiving yardage with 145 on four grabs. Brown had four receptions for 29 yards.
Defensively, the Quakers forced three Wooster turnovers. Senior Jordan Thompson (Riverview, FL/East Bay) led Earlham with nine tackles, while senior Brandon Mock (Winchester, IN/Winchester) added eight.
Earlham (3-6, 1-5) finishes the season at home next Saturday as the Quakers welcome Denison University to M.O. Ross Field. The NCAC contest begins at 1 p.m. Box Score.
