For Immediate Release:
Sept. 1, 2007
RICHMOND, Ind. — Opening day at Darrell Beane Stadium didn’t go as planned as the Earlham College football team started the 2007 season with a 24-16 loss to the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology.
The arrival of the season opener in the new stadium pleased Earlham Head Coach Gerry Keesling. “We were thrilled to finally get the opportunity to run onto the field and play a game,” he said. “This is such a great facility and we had a wonderful crowd and appreciate the support. We had just hoped for a better outcome in our first game here.”
After scoring early in the fourth quarter, the Quakers had a shot at tying the game in the final minute, but the drive stalled with incomplete passes.
Rose-Hulman scored on its first drive of the contest to take a 7-0 lead. After Earlham turned the ball over on downs and the Engineers punted, the Quakers put together a 16-play, 74-yard drive that ended with a 24-yard field goal by sophomore Alexander Cogbill with two seconds remaining in the first period.
Unfortunately for the Quakers by the middle of the second quarter, Rose-Hulman added a field goal and another touchdown to lead 17-3.
Earlham bounced back late in the first half with another long scoring drive. Junior Randy Kerns (West Manchester, OH/National Trail) tossed a 15-yard touchdown pass to first-year Kyle Ripperger (Richmond, IN/Richmond) with 1:34 left in the second period. The play capped a 13-play, 69-yard drive that made it 17-9 after the extra point attempt was blocked.
The Quakers started the second half with a punt after three plays and Rose-Hulman took advantage of its initial possession of the third quarter with a touchdown to make it 24-9. The Engineers put together a 20-play, 87-yard drive that lasted 8:41 seconds.
Both teams exchanged punts before the Quakers scored the final touchdown of the contest with 12:00 left in the game.
Earlham moved down the field quickly from its own 13-yard line with an 87-yard scoring drive in five plays. After an incomplete pass, Kerns found Ripperger 22 yards. A 38-yard pass from Kerns to senior Joe White (Richmond, IN/Richmond) put the ball in Rose-Hulman territory at the 27-yard line. One play later, Kerns and White hooked up on a 27-yard scoring strike.
Kerns finished the afternoon with 19 completions in 35 attempts for 226 yards and a pair of touchdowns.
White had six receptions for 98 yards and the one scoring pass that extended his career school record touchdown total to 24.
Defensively, sophomore Cale Gulliford (Marion, IN/Marion) led the Quakers with nine tackles, while junior Colin McCullough (Gary, IN/Hammond Noll) added seven.
Senior Terrel Brown (Richmond, IN/Richmond) had an interception and sophomore Adam LaFollette (Riverview, FL/Riverview) had two quarterback sacks.
The Quakers (0-1) return home next Saturday against Manchester. The non-conference contest starts at 1 p.m. Box score.
