Quakers Drop Non-Conference Contest to Manchester

For Immediate Release:
Sept. 8, 2007

RICHMOND, Ind. — An interception in the third quarter turned the tide against the Earlham College football team as the Quakers fell 27-14 to Manchester College on Saturday at Darrell Beane Stadium.

With the Quakers training 20-7 and driving for a score midway through the third quarter, a reversal of fortune with a 92-yard interception return sealed Earlham’s fate. “We were a lot more inconsistent this week than we were last week,” Earlham Head Coach Gerry Keesling said. “And we didn’t take care of the football very well.”

Earlham had three turnovers in the contest, while surrendering two scoring drives of over 10 plays. “We’ve got to take care of the football and move the chains,” Keesling said. “Defensively, we got to get our opponents off the field.”

Manchester’s first score came on a 10-play, 72-yard drive in the opening period that made it 7-0.

In the second quarter, the Quakers got on the scoreboard with a 16-yard touchdown pass from junior Randy Kerns (West Manchester, OH/National Trail) to first-year Bryant Foreman (Mechanicsburg, OH/ Northeastern) with 7:02 left to play capping an 11-play, 62-yard drive.

Unfortunately for the Quakers, Manchester added a field goal to make it 10-7 with 2:22 remaining in the second stanza. Kerns then tossed an interception on Earlham’s next possession allowing the Spartans to convert another field goal at the end of the half for a 13-7 advantage at intermission.

The Spartans began the second half with a score on their initial possession to take a 20-7 lead. After an Earlham punt and Manchester turning the ball over on downs, the fateful drive that ended in a 92-yard interception return for a touchdown gave the Spartans their 27-7 lead.

Kerns and Foreman did hook up again with 1:54 left in the contest for a 55-yard touchdown pass for the final score of the game.

Foreman finished with seven grabs for 125 yards and a pair of touchdowns, while Kerns completed 16-of-35 passes for 213 yards and two touchdowns.

Senior Manny Myers (Fairmount, IN/Madison-Grant) led the Quakers in rushing with 74 yards in 18 carries.

Sophomore Adam LaFollette (Riverview, FL/Riverview) led the Quakers defensively with nine tackles including two behind the line of scrimmage. Senior Terrel Brown (Richmond, IN/Richmond) and sophomore Cale Gulliford (Marion, IN/Marion) added six tackles each.

The Quakers (0-2) visit Anderson University next Saturday. “We’ve got to play better defense and we’ve got a big challenge in front of us,” Keesling said of the first road contest of the season. “Offensively, we’ve got to get ourselves in the end zone more.” Earlham’s final non-conference game of the year starts at 1:30 p.m. Box score.
