Injuries Continue as Quakers Fall in NCAC Contest
For Immediate Release:
Oct. 6, 2007
RICHMOND, Ind. — Injuries have become the story of the season for the Earlham College football team.
With six players already out for the season and three more inactive for Saturday, the Quakers lost a few more in a 73-0 loss to Wittenberg University on M.O. Ross Field at Darrell Beane Stadium. “The injuries make everything difficult,” Earlham Head Coach Gerry Keesling said. “Especially, when we were down to four offensive linemen and have to move a nose guard to offense. We are coaching on the run.”
Earlham’s first three possessions in the North Coast Athletic Conference contest ended in turnovers, which led to points for the Tigers (4-1, 2-0). “We had way too many errors, and we just can’t afford to do that against a team that is fighting for a conference championship,” Keesling said.
Wittenberg, the co-defending NCAC champions, led 24-0 after one quarter and 45-0 by intermission before adding four more touchdowns in second half.
Senior receiver Joe White (Richmond, IN/Richmond) did tie the career record for receiving yards with three catches for 23 yards. He now has 2,227 yards, which matches the Earlham mark established by Todd Hawkins (1988-91). White already holds the Earlham career record for touchdown receptions with 24, and he needs 20 catches to tie Hawkins and Scott Peasley (1989-92) at 169 for the most grabs in a career.
Senior running back Manny Myers (Fairmount, IN/Madison-Grant) led the Quakers with 66 yards rushing on 23 carries. He also had two receptions for 32 yards. Quarterback Randy Kerns was 10-of-21 for 69 yards.
First-year Ben Randell (Milford, OH/Milford) led the Quakers defensively with nine tackles.
The Quakers (1-4, 0-2) return to action next Saturday at Oberlin College. The NCAC game gets underway at 1 p.m. Box score.
