For Immediate Release:
Oct. 13, 2007
OBERLIN, Ohio — The Earlham College football team had a third quarter advantage erased by Oberlin College on Saturday as the Quakers dropped a 42-14 North Coast Athletic Conference contest.
The Quakers led 14-7 early in the second half before the Yeomen scored five times to put the game away with four rushing touchdowns coming from junior R.V. Carroll.
After a scoreless first period, Oberlin found the end zone at 7:31 of the second quarter to lead 7-0. Earlham was forced to punt on its next possession, but the Quakers created a turnover three plays later to get the ball back.
Junior Drew Hosier (Gas City, IN/Mississenewa) intercepted a pass to set up Earlham’s first touchdown that tied the contest 7-7. Junior quarterback Randy Kerns (West Manchester, OH/National Trail) completed a 47-yard scoring pass to senior Terrel Brown (Richmond, IN/Richmond) at 3:35.
Earlham began the third quarter with a 6-play, 65-yard drive to take a 14-7 lead. Brown completed his only pass attempt on a 17-yard scoring play to first-year Bryant Foreman (Mechanicsburg, OH/ Northeastern).
From that point, Oberlin’s ground attack took over as Carroll finished with 217 yards on 34 carries with four scores.
Kerns ended the day completing 20-of-37 passes for 287 yards and one touchdown. First-year Kyle Ripperger (Richmond, IN/Richmond) led the Quakers with seven receptions for 97 yards.
Defensively, sophomore Adam LaFollette (Riverview, FL/Riverview) led the Quakers with eight tackles, while Brown, senior Evan Williamson (Fountain City, IN/Northeastern) and sophomore Cale Gulliford (Marion, IN/Marion) had seven tackles each.
New Record
Senior receiver Joe White (Richmond, IN/Richmond) established a career record for receiving yards with three catches for 24 yards. He now has 2,251 yards, which passes the 2,227 yards set by Todd Hawkins (1988-91), while already holding the Earlham career record for touchdown receptions with 24. White, who is closing in on another mark, needs 17 catches to tie Hawkins and Scott Peasley (1989-92) at 169 for the most receptions in a career.
The Quakers (1-5, 0-3) return for Homecoming next Saturday to entertain Kenyon College on M.O. Ross Field at Darrell Beane Stadium. The NCAC game begins at 1 p.m. Box score.
