Darrell Beane Stadium Officially Dedicated
For Immediate Release:
Oct. 20, 2007
RICHMOND, Ind. — Homecoming victories are always special and the Earlham College football team didn’t disappoint the large crowd Saturday as the Quakers defeated Kenyon College 42-35.
Adding to the enjoyment of the win was the fact that it was also the official dedication of Darrell Beane Stadium. “This is pretty good feeling,” Earlham Head Coach Gerry Keelsing said. “To be able to sing to the fans and the alumni after the game was great. Having everyone here was just awesome.”
Senior Terrel Brown (Richmond, IN/Richmond) capped off the effort by scoring the game-winning touchdown with 33 seconds remaining. “We grew up a lot as a team,” Keesling said. “We’ve been battling injuries and adversity all year, and we were still able to come in and finish the game.”
Brown squeezed into the end zone on a quarterback sneak finishing a 17-play, 95-yard scoring drive that took 5:52 to complete. “I had to get there,” Brown said of crossing the goal line. “Everybody did their job and the line got a great push.”
The final drive by Quakers was set up by an interception by junior Tilmon Clark (Winchester, IN/Winchester) as Kenyon appeared to be headed for a score to take the lead. “It was just a great play,” Keesling said.
With the momentum of the defensive play by Clark, Earlham’s offense responded as the Quakers converted on three keys plays to keep the final drive alive. The first was a 6-yard pass from junior quarterback Randy Kerns (West Manchester, OH/National Trail) to senior Joe White (Richmond, IN/Richmond) on a third down play.
Kerns then hooked up with first-year Bryant Foreman (Mechanicsburg, OH/ Northeastern) on another third down pass good for 31 yards. A few plays later, Kerns found first-year Michael Joyce (Pendleton, IN/Pendleton Heights) along the sideline for 12 yards on fourth down. “Everybody stepped up when it counted,” White said. “Tilmon had a great interception and the offensive line carried us down the field. I was just glad to be able to contribute to the win.”
Although White only caught one pass on the game-winning drive, he finished the afternoon with seven receptions for 139 yards and three touchdowns. Kerns was 16-of-31 for 284 yards and four scores. Foreman had four catches for 74 yards and one touchdown.
Brown, who played some quarterback for the Quakers to add another dimension to the offense, completed 1-of-3 passes for nine yards, while rushing for 53 yards and a pair of touchdowns.
Sophomore Cale Gulliford (Marion, IN/Marion) led the Quakers on defense with 15 tackles, while senior Evan Williamson (Fountain City, IN/Northeastern) and sophomore Adam LaFollette (Riverview, FL/Riverview) added 9½ tackles each.
In addition to Clark’s interception, sophomore John Metcalf (Galveston, IN/Lewis Cass) stopped possible Kenyon scoring drive by recovering a fumble on the Earlham 6-yard line in the third quarter with the game tied 35-35.
Wild Opening Period
Both teams scored on their first three possession of the game as the opening quarter ended with the game tied 21-21.
White caught a 54-yard pass from Kerns with 14:36 left in the first quarter on the second play from scrimmage. Kenyon scored moments later to make it 7-7.
The Quakers went back on top on a 19-yard scoring strike from Kerns to Foreman with 11:34 left in the first quarter. Kenyon responded with another score to tie it at 14-14.
Brown scored his first touchdown of the game at 5:55 to give Earlham a 21-14 advantage, but that didn’t last long as the Lords found the end zone again to even the score heading into the second stanza.
Kenyon (2-5, 1-3) went in front in the second quarter with a touchdown, but the Lords failed to convert the extra point to lead 27-21. Earlham bounced back when Kerns found White for a 48-yard touchdown pass with 4:53 left in the first half to put the Quakers on top 28-27 at intermission.
On its initial possession of the second half, Kenyon scored and added a two-point conversion to take a 35-28 lead with 9:24 remaining in the third quarter.
Exactly three minutes later, Kerns and White connected for their third touchdown pass of the day on an 11-yard score as the Quakers tied the game at 35-35 to set the stage for the Homecoming heroics.
Earlham (2-5, 1-3) is back in action on the road next Saturday at Hiram College. The NCAC contest begins at 1 p.m. Box score.
