For Immediate Release:
Oct. 27, 2007
HIRAM, Ohio — Three touchdowns in the first half gave the Earlham College football team a boost on Saturday as the Quakers posted their second straight win with a 31-14 North Coast Athletic Conference victory over Hiram College.
Saturday’s win also marked the first time the Quakers have won two consecutive conference games since 2001. “It’s awesome,” Earlham Head Coach Gerry Keesling said. “For this team to put together back-to-back wins with all of the adversity we’ve had with injuries is great tribute to our players.”
After a turnover and a punt on their first two drives of the contest the Quakers finally got on the scoreboard on a 7-yard run by senior Manny Myers (Fairmount, IN/Madison-Grant) with 27 seconds left in the opening period.
Earlham forced Hiram to punt on its next possession, but the Quakers drive ended with another turnover.
The Terriers were forced to punt again by Earlham’s defense and this time the Quakers responded with a 10-play, 68-yard drive that ended with Myers scoring on a 1-yard run to make it 14-0 with 6:12 remaining in the first half.
A third Earlham touchdown with 33 seconds on the clock before intermission gave the Quakers 21-0. Junior quarterback Randy Kerns (West Manchester, OH/National Trail) capped a 10-play, 82-yard drive with a 31-yard scoring pass to first-year Bryant Foreman (Mechanicsburg, OH/ Northeastern).
Hiram (0-8, 0-5) cut its deficit to 21-7 with a touchdown early in the third quarter for the only score of the period, but the Quakers with 10 points in the final stanza to put the contest out of reach.
Sophomore Alexander Cogbill (Plainfield, VT/Twinfield Union) booted his fourth field goal of the season from 19 yards away to make it 24-7 with 14:14 left in the game. Senior Terrel Brown (Richmond, IN/Richmond) added another touchdown on a 1-yard run to make it 31-7 before Hiram reached the end zone for the final tally of the afternoon.
Myers led the Quakers with 156 yards rushing on 33 carries with a pair of touchdowns. He also had five catches for 47 yards. Kerns was 20-of-33 passing for 293 yards and a score.
First-year Kyle Ripperger (Richmond, IN/Richmond) had five receptions for 69 yards, while Foreman finished with four grabs for 99 yards and a touchdown. First-year Michael Joyce (Pendleton, IN/Pendleton Heights) pulled down four passes for 58 yards.
Defensively, sophomore Adam LaFollette (Riverview, FL/Riverview) led the Quakers with 7½ tackles, while senior Eric Sturgeon (Logansport, IN/Logansport) added seven tackles with 3½ quarterback sacks. First-year Ben Randell (Milford, OH/Milford) had an interception.
Historic Moment
After Brown’s touchdown in the fourth quarter, junior kicker Hillary Carter (Middletown, OH/Lakota East) became the first female to play in a game for the Quakers when she kicked the extra point to give the Quakers a 31-7 advantage. “I didn’t have time to be nervous,” Carter said. “It just happened.”
The Quakers (3-5, 2-3) return to Darrell Beane Stadium next Saturday for the last time in 2007 to face the College of Wooster. The NCAC game on Senior Day is at 1 p.m. Box score.
