Quakers Fall in NCAC Home Contest
For Immediate Release:
Nov. 3, 2007
RICHMOND, Ind. — Senior Day for the Earlham College football team didn’t turn out the way the Quakers would have liked on Saturday.
The 66-14 North Coast Athletic Conference loss to the College of Wooster was the final contest at Darrell Beane Stadium for seniors Terrel Brown (Richmond, IN/Richmond), Alex Graham (Hiram, OH/Streetsboro), Carl Moravec (Oak Park, IL/Oak Park), Manny Myers (Fairmount, IN/Madison-Grant), Eric Sturgeon (Logansport, IN/Logansport), Joe White (Richmond, IN/Richmond) and Evan Williamson (Fountain City, IN/Northeastern).
“They are an outstanding group,” Earlham Head Coach Gerry Keesling said. “This was my first recruiting class. It was disappointing for me that we didn’t perform up to our level for those guys. All of our seniors are going to be hard to replace.”
After Earlham blocked a Wooster field goal attempt to keep the contest scoreless early in the opening period, three straight turnovers hurt the Quakers as the Scots took advantage of the situation to build a 21-0 lead. “The whole game just started sliding downhill against us and we never got it stopped,” Keesling said. “We had problems with turnovers and field position all day.”
Wooster (3-6, 3-3) scored three more times in the second quarter with two touchdowns coming after Earlham turnovers to lead 42-0 at intermission.
Myers got the Quakers on the scoreboard in the third period on an 18-yard run at the 4:19 to make it 52-7.
Earlham added its final score of the contest in the fourth period on a 32-yard pass from first-year quarterback Derek Toschlog (Richmond, IN/Richmond) to classmate Adam Painter (New Haven, IN/Ft. Wayne Snider).
Junior quarterback Randy Kerns (West Manchester, OH/National Trail) was 16-of-33 for 133 yards, while Joe White led the Quakers with 11 grabs for 89 yards.
White Sets Receiving Record
White’s numbers for the day gives him 171 receptions in his career, which is an Earlham record erasing the mark of 169 established by Todd Hawkins (1988-91) and Scott Peasley (1989-92). White already holds the record for receiving yardage (2,487) and receiving touchdowns (27).
Defensively, Williamson led the Quakers with 8½ tackles, while sophomore Cale Gulliford (Marion, IN/Marion) added 7½ tackles.
The Quakers (3-6, 2-4) visit Denison University next Saturday for the season finale. The NCAC contest begins at 1 p.m. Box score.
