More about football
For more than a century, intercollegiate football has been played
at Earlham and dates back to the Quakers' first game against
Miami of Ohio in 1889. Early Earlham gridiron lore includes Emory
Ratcliff who made 10-of-11 field goal tries in a victory over
Muncie Normal College (now Ball State University) in 1900. That's
a feat unmatched in collegiate football history! The Quakers
now play a 10-game schedule, including eight games against conference
opponents. Home contests are played on a natural-grass, on-campus
facility. Built in 1975, M.O. Ross Field was named after the
man who coached the Earlham gridders from 1925-36.
In a move to affiliate itself with other colleges
with like academic philosophies, Earlham joined the North Coast
Athletic
Conference (NCAC) in 1989.
"When our coaching staff evaluates prospective student-athletes,
we seek young men who are dedicated to success in the classroom
and on the playing field," said Earlham head coach Gerry
Keesling. "Our goal is to compete with the best in the NCAC,
one of the strongest conferences in NCAA Division III football."
While participants in the Quaker football program
take their athletic commitment seriously, they are counseled
to give academics
top priority. Craig Gottschalk '94, a four-year letterman and
a three-year starter at linebacker, was an NCAC Scholar-Athlete.
Earning his bachelor's degree in politics, he received a Barrister
Scholarship to attend the Ohio Northern University Law School.
Belonging
to the NCAA Division III, Earlham offers academic scholarships
to qualifying students as well as need-based
financial
aid. Contact:
