September 3, 2005
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. —
A trip to Pennsylvania started the season for the Earlham College men’s soccer team as the Quakers lost 4-1 to Swarthmore College in the Garnet Alumni Classic at Swarthmore.

Chris Sloan

Earlham led 1-0 for most of the contest after Chris Sloan (Bethesda, MD/Sidwell Friends) scored on an assist from Liam Roche at 6:30 in the first half.

Swarthmore scored all four of its goals in the second half after knotting the contest at 1-1 with 59:40 on the clock. “They took over the second half,” Earlham coach Roy Messer said. “We played with a high level of intensity in the first part of both halves.”

Jon O’Neil (West Lafayette, IN/West Lafayette) was in goal for the Quakers and had six saves.

Earlham (0-1) plays Widener on Sunday in the second game of the event at Swarthmore.
