Quakers comeback to tie NCAC contest

RICHMOND, Ind. —
A valiant comeback ended in a tie Saturday as the Earlham College men’s
soccer team played to a 2-2 double overtime final with Hiram College on Matlack
Field.
Hiram led 1-0 at the half of the North Coast Athletic
Conference match. The Terriers added a goal early in the second period
at 50:42. The Quakers
gathered
on the field to discuss the two-goal deficit. First-year Victor Anciano (San
Antonio-Altos, Venezuela/Armand Hammer) responded
for the Quakers with his first score of the match at 52:22 with an assist
from Matt Smith (Columbia Crossroads, PA/George).
Earlham kept the pressure on Hiram and the Quakers
were eventually awarded a penalty kick, which Anciano converted
at 84:05.
The teams battled through two extra sessions with
the Quakers holding a 5-1 edge in shots. For the game, Earlham out
shot Hiram 15-11
as junior goalie
Jon O’Neil (West Lafayette, IN/West
Lafayette) had five saves.
Earlham (4-9-1, 1-3-1) is on the road Wednesday
at Wittenberg University. The NCAC contest starts at 6 p.m. Box
