October 15, 2005
RICHMOND, Ind. —
A valiant comeback ended in a tie Saturday as the Earlham College men’s soccer team played to a 2-2 double overtime final with Hiram College on Matlack Field.

Hiram led 1-0 at the half of the North Coast Athletic Conference match. The Terriers added a goal early in the second period at 50:42. The Quakers gathered on the field to discuss the two-goal deficit. First-year Victor Anciano (San Antonio-Altos, Venezuela/Armand Hammer) responded for the Quakers with his first score of the match at 52:22 with an assist from Matt Smith (Columbia Crossroads, PA/George).

Earlham kept the pressure on Hiram and the Quakers were eventually awarded a penalty kick, which Anciano converted at 84:05.

The teams battled through two extra sessions with the Quakers holding a 5-1 edge in shots. For the game, Earlham out shot Hiram 15-11 as junior goalie Jon O’Neil (West Lafayette, IN/West Lafayette) had five saves.

Earlham (4-9-1, 1-3-1) is on the road Wednesday at Wittenberg University. The NCAC contest starts at 6 p.m. Box score
