RICHMOND, Ind. — Saturday
was about Earlham College men’s
soccer coach Roy Messer as he celebrated the end of his 25th season
with the Quakers
as part of the Homecoming weekend.
Unfortunately for the Quakers, North Coast Athletic Conference foe
Oberlin College spoiled the party with a 1-0 win over the Quakers
on Matlack Field claiming the Freedom Trophy.
Awarded to the winning team, the Freedom Trophy
was established by the members of the 1954 men’s soccer team
that was inducted into the Earlham Athletics Hall of Fame on Oct.
28.
Oberlin scored at 17:41 in the first half for
the only score of the contest. Earlham was out shot 12-11, but
had six shots on goal
compared to Oberlin’s four. Junior goalkeeper Jon O’Neil
(West Lafayette, IN/West Lafayette) had three saves.
Earlham finishes its season at 4-12-2 overall and
