Men's Soccer

2007 Season Preview

For Immediate Release:
August 30, 2007

RICHMOND, Ind. — There is some excitement building for the Earlham College men’s soccer team as Roy Messer enters his 27th season at the helm of the program.

Messer’s optimism comes from the number of talented players on the roster. “I’m excited and I think we are better,” he said. “We have the athleticism and the depth that we’ve lack in recent years, so going to compete with a lot of teams and be in a lot of matches.”

There are eight seniors and 11 other letterwinners. “We have a solid senior core and that’s important,” Messer said. “We’re going to score goals and we have lot of ways to score. We’re should have some balance and we’re going to compete in the midfield.”

The seniors are David Hibbard-Rode (Minneapolis, MN/South), Atiq Zamani (Bloomington, IN/North), Nhlanhla Maduna (Ezulwini, Swaziland/Li Po Chun), Will Nacev (Ft. Thomas, KY/Seven Hills), Matt Smith (Columbia Crossroads, PA/George), Mac Bol (Nairobi, Kenya/Li Po Chun), Chris Sloan (Bethesda, MD/Sidwell Friends) and Zac Schmitz (Cincinnati, OH/Sycamore).

Also back are juniors Victor Anciano (San Antonio-Altos, Venezuela/Armand Hammer),
Ben Solganik (Dayton, OH/Centerville) and Michael Ellis (Oregon, OH/St. Francis DeSales).

Rob Crauder (Stillwater, OK/Westtown), Kevin Amagai (Tenafly, NJ/Tenafly), Mamary Diarra (Harare, Zimbabwe/International), Galen Wilder (Berea, KY/Model Lab), Asad Sabree (Indianapolis, IN/Warith Deen Mohammed), Adam Jackson (Richmond, IN/Richmond), Will Katz (Seattle, WA/Garfield) and Omar Dreidi (Ramallah, Palestine/International) are the returning sophomores on the roster.

A concern in the early part of the season comes with an inexperienced goalie and if anyone gets hurt. “We going to have a first-year goalkeeper,” Messer said. “We’re also a little thin in the back if we have some injuries. Other than that I feel we’re in good shape.”

First-years Kyle Thompson (Elmhurst, IL/York Community) and Jonah Kreniske (New York, NY/Manhattan Center for Science & Math) are competing for the spot in goal.

Other newcomers to the program are sophomore Cade Eastman (Cambridge, MA/Waldorf School), first-years Nathan Roche (North Vernon, IN/Jennings County), Louis Bates (Frankfort, KY/Frankfort), Peter Strand (Berea, KY/Berea), Bannett Asingura (Mbarara, Uganda/United World College), Jeremy Pillow (Urbana, IL/University), Josue Rivera (Princeton, NJ/Pennington School) and Jorge Villagran (Guatemala/International).

The Quakers start the season with the El Rodeo Raven Quaker Classic on Matlack Field. Earlham entertains Capital University on Aug. 31. “It will be tough,” Messer said of the opening match. “Capital will be a real test because they have a lot of returning players. We’ll have a good idea about where we are as a team right away. If we have any problems, we’ll find out.”

Earlham starts the season on Friday against Capital University in the El Rodeo Raven-Quaker Classic. The match begins at 5 p.m.
