Quakers Win Freedom Trophy Match in Overtime

RICHMOND, Ind. — First-year Bannett Asingura scored twice as the Earlham College men’s soccer team defeated Oberlin College 2-1 in overtime on Matlack Field to claim the Freedom Trophy.
It was the first time that the Quakers won the Freedom Trophy since its establishment three seasons ago by the members of the 1954 Earlham men’s soccer team that was inducted into the Earlham Athletics Hall of Fame in 2005.
Asingura (Mbarara, Uganda/United World College) gave the Quakers a 1-0 lead in the opening half of the North Coast Athletic Conference match at 22:37 with an assist from senior Atiq Zamani (Bloomington, IN/North).
The Yeoman tied the contest 1-1 at 67:22, which was the last goal in regulation.
Asingura scored the game-winner at 96:26 in the extra session with Zamani assisting on the play.
Earlham first-year goalkeeper Kyle Thompson (Elmhurst, IL/York Community) had six saves for the Quakers.
Oberlin led 16-12 in shots and 11-1 in corner kicks.
The Quakers (4-8, 1-2) entertain Wabash College on Wednesday. The NCAC match begins at 4:30 p.m. Box score.
