Oct. 23, 2007
RICHMOND, Ind. — First-year Bannett Asingura scored four goals and assisted on another on Tuesday to lead the Earlham College men’s soccer team to a 5-0 victory over Denison University on Matlack Field.
The four scores by Asingura (Mbarara, Uganda/United World College) are the most by an Earlham men’s soccer player since Luke Uetrecht (1983-84) found the net four times in a 4-0 win over Wabash College in 1983. It was the second time a player had four goals in the 27-year tenure of Earlham Head Coach Roy Messer.
Asingura broke open the scoreless North Coast Athletic Conference contest with a pair of goals late in the first period. The first score came at 43:36 with the second coming at 44:07. Senior Atiq Zamani (Bloomington, IN/North) assisted on both scores.
Sophomore Omar Dreidi (Ramallah, Palestine/International) made it 3-0 in the second half with a goal at 51:13 with an assist from Asingura.
Later in the period, Asingura made it 4-0 at 58:39. Senior Chris Sloan (Bethesda, MD/Sidwell Friends) was credited with an assist on the play. Asingura added an unassisted goal at 60:45 for the final tally of the match. It was the 10th score of the season for Asingura.
First-year Kyle Thompson (Elmhurst, IL/York Community) had five saves as he posted the initial shutout of his career.
Tuesday was the final home match for Zamani, Sloan and classmates David Hibbard-Rode (Minneapolis, MN/South), Nhlanhla Maduna (Ezulwini, Swaziland/Li Po Chun), Will Nacev (Ft. Thomas, KY/Seven Hills), Matt Smith (Columbia Crossroads, PA/George), Mac Bol (Nairobi, Kenya/Li Po Chun), and Zac Schmitz (Cincinnati, OH/Sycamore).
Earlham (6-11, 3-4) plays at the College of Wooster on Saturday. The NCAC match gets underway at 3:30 p.m. Box score.
