March 1, 2008
RICHMOND, Ind. — The Earlham College men’s tennis team picked up some wins Saturday, but the Quakers fell 6-3 to St. Joseph’s College on the Trueblood Courts in the Athletics and Wellness Center.
“We had some competitive matches, but we just were not able to pull all of them out,” Earlham Head Coach Justin Carrier said.
Senior Scott Miller (Greensburg, IN/Greensburg) and first-year Michael Von Vogt (South Bristol, ME/Lincoln Academy) earned Earlham’s initial victory of the day with an 8-5 win over Brandon Ward and Ishan Gohil at No. 1 doubles.
In singles action, Miller posted a 6-4, 6-2 win over Ward at No. 1. Earlham’s other win was by sophomore Steven Gotama (Balikpapan, Indonesia/Lester B. Pearson). “I’m really proud of Steven, who got the first win of his college career,” Carrier said.
Gotama beat Richard Ewbank 7-6 (8), 6-2 at No. 5 singles.
The difficult part of the day for the Quakers was a pair of losses in tiebreakers. Von Vogt was defeated 6-7 (4), 7-5, 1-0 (12) by Gohil at No. 2 singles, while first-year Colin Swihart (Midland, MI/Midland) fell 3-6, 6-2, 1-0 (4) to Zach Haynes at No. 6.
The Quakers (0-2) face Wilmington College at home on Tuesday. The non-conference match gets underway at 4 p.m. Scoresheet.
