Quakers Beat Central State 9-0

RICHMOND, Ind. — The Earlham College men’s tennis team posted a 9-0 win Tuesday afternoon over Central State University on the Trueblood Courts in the Athletics and Wellness Center.

The Quakers lost only one game during the doubles competition and just three in singles action. “Our guys hit the ball well and it was nice to get into the win column,” Earlham Head Coach Justin Carrier said.

Senior Scott Miller (Greensburg, IN/Greensburg) and first-year Michael Von Vogt (South Bristol, ME/Lincoln Academy) won 8-0 over James Hampton and Eric Burba at No. 1. Von Vogt is expected to play at No. 2 singles for the Quakers.

Sophomore Aaron Weeden (Muncie, IN/Burris) and first-year Josue Rivera (Princeton, NJ/Pennington) beat Will Gaines and Derryl Brownlee 8-1 at No. 2.

At No. 3 doubles, senior Sergey Grechukhin (Nizny Novgorod, Russia/United World College) teamed with first-year Colin Swihart (Midland, MI/Midland) to win 8-0 over Everette Bennett and Derrick Morgan.

In singles, Miller beat Hampton 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1, while Von Vogt defeated Burba by the same score at No. 2. Weeden won 6-2, 6-0 over Gaines at No. 3. Rivera beat Brownlee 6-1, 6-0 at No. 4.

Sophomore Steven Gotama (Balikpapan, Indonesia/Lester B. Pearson) earned a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Bennett at No. 5 with Grechukhin winning with an identical score at No. 6 over Morgan.

Earlham (1-3) visits Manchester College on Wednesday. The non-conference match begins at 3:30 p.m. Scoresheet.
