NO. MANCHESTER, Ind. — Trailing by one point with two singles matches remaining on Wednesday, the Earlham College men’s tennis team came back to win its second straight contest with a 5-4 victory over Manchester College.

Senior Sergey Grechukhin (Nizny Novgorod, Russia/United World College) ended his No. 6 singles contest with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Dustin Schutte to tie the match.

At that point, Earlham first-year Josue Rivera (Princeton, NJ/Pennington) and Manchester’s Dan Beedle were knotted up at one set apiece at No. 4 singles with all of the other players from both teams watching the deciding match.

Beedle led 3-1 in the final set before Rivera rebounded to win the match 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 to give the Quakers the victory. “It was great to see a first-year come up with a clutch win like that,” Earlham Head Coach Justin Carrier said. “Not only was it nice to get a second consecutive win as a team, it was especially satisfying to beat a team that defeated us last fall.”

Earlham fell behind 2-1 after the doubles competition with senior Scott Miller (Greensburg, IN/Greensburg) and first-year Michael Von Vogt (South Bristol, ME/Lincoln Academy) winning  8-0 over Andrew Tkacs and Beedle at No. 1.

Needing four wins in the six singles matches the Quakers were able to get victories from Miller and Von Vogt to set the stage for the decisive final contests. Miller beat Tkacs 6-0, 6-3 at No. 1, while Von Vogt defeated Josh Walker 6-2, 6-2 at No. 2.

The Quakers (2-3) play a pair of matches on Saturday in Ft. Wayne. The Indiana Tech contest begins at 10 a.m. Earlham then faces Aquinas College at 1 p.m. Scoresheet.
