Quakers Begin Year in NCAC Relays

GRANVILLE, Ohio — The Earlham College men’s track team started its indoor season Saturday in the North Coast Athletic Conference Relays at the Mitchell Recreation and Athletics Center at Denison University.

“Overall, I was really pleased with our performance,” Earlham Head Coach Nick Johnson said. “We just have to continue to work hard and stay healthy.”

The top performance of the day was turned in by Earlham’s throwers. First-year Chad Wertman (Holland, IN/Southridge) and sophomore Chris Shaw (Anderson, IN/Pendleton Heights) combined to take first in the shot put relay. Wertman had a toss of 44’8¾” with Shaw recording a 44’0¾” as the duo won the event.

Next for the Quakers was the fourth-place finish of first-year Austin Manahan (Orlando, FL/University) and senior Mwaura Wambiga (Nairobu, Kenya/Li Po Chun) in the triple jump relay. Manahan had a jump of 41’7” with Wambiga adding a 38’6¾” leap. The pair added a sixth place finish in the long jump relay. Manahan had a distance of 19’8¾” and Wambiga had a 17”11” jump.

In the 5,000-meter run relay, senior Mark Boylan (Holliston, MA/Holliston) and sophomore Evan Fackler (Shelby, OH/Plymouth) finished fifth. Boylan posted a time of 16:21.71, while Fackler ran a 16:24.70.

First-year Lenden Bowsman (New Castle, IN/New Castle), sophomore Will Katz (Seattle, WA/Garfield), sophomore Bo Braun (Nutley, NJ/Nutley) and junior James Haley (Bloomington, IN/South) finished sixth in the sprint medley relay with a time of 3:53.44. The 800-meter relay team of Braun, Katz, first-year Jonah Kreniske (New York, NY/Martin Luther King) and Bowsman was eighth with a time of 1:40.81.

Ohio Wesleyan University won the meet, while the Quakers ended in ninth of 10 teams.

Earlham competes at the Anderson Invitational next Saturday, Feb 9. The meet is at 3 p.m.
