Quakers Compete in Anderson Invitational

ANDERSON, Ind. — The Earlham College men’s track team had two individual champions and a winning relay team in Saturday’s Anderson Invitational as the Quakers finished third of five squads in the event.

Earlham senior Mark Boylan (Holliston, MA/Holliston) ran a 16:28.03 to win the 5,000 meters for the second week in a row. Sophomore Evan Fackler (Shelby, OH/Plymouth) was right behind Boylan and was second in 16:34.41.

First-year Austin Manahan (Orlando, FL/University) took the triple jump with a distance of 40’10½” as the Quakers claimed the top three positions in the event. Sophomore Malick Keita (Bamako, Mali/Lycee Francais Liberte) was second with a leap of 40’5” with senior Mwaura Wambiga (Nairobi, Kenya/Li Po Chun UWC) finishing third with 39’ 7¼.”

First-years Lenden Bowsman (New Castle, IN/New Castle) and Ben Randall (Milford, OH/Milford) along with sophomores Will Katz (Seattle, WA/Garfield) and Bo Braun (Nutley, NJ/Nutley) won the 1,600-meter relay in 3:28.89. This group added a second place finish the 400-meter relay with a time of 45.23 seconds.

Senior Nick Welsh (Muncie, IN/Wes Del) set a school record in the hammer with a throw of 128’11” to finish in fifth place. Welsh also placed second in the javelin with a toss of 150’9.”

Earlham’s other participants to score Saturday were:
• Braun, second, 400, 50.94.
• Sophomore John White (Ann Arbor, MI/Huron), second, 3,000 steeplechase, 10:49.20.
• Sophomore Chris Shaw (Anderson, IN/Pendleton Heights), third, shot put, 45’5¾.”
• Shaw, third, discus, 144’9.”
• Katz, fourth, 200, 24.06.
• First-year Chad Wertman (Holland, IN/Southridge), fourth, shot put, 44’6¼.”
• First-year Cyrus Dudgeon (Cambridge, MA/Rindge and Latin), fifth, 100, 12.93.
• Bowsman, fifth, 200, 24.52.
• Junior James Haley (Bloomington IN/South), fifth, 1,500, 4:21.94.
• Wambiga, fifth, long jump, 18’4¼.”

Overall, the Quakers finished third in the five-team meet with Anderson University winning the title.

Earlham participates in the Indiana Intercollegiate Championships at IUPUI next weekend. The meet gets underway Friday at 4 p.m., while the action begins on Saturday at 10 a.m.
