Quakers Finish Weekend in Indianapolis

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — The Earlham College men’s track team scored in a pair of events on Saturday as the Quakers wrapped up the two-day Indiana Intercollegiate Championships at IUPUI.

Senior Nick Welsh (Muncie, IN/Wes-Del) finished fourth in the javelin with a toss of 162’4.”

First-years Lenden Bowsman (New Castle, IN/New Castle) and Ben Randall (Milford, OH/Milford) along with sophomores Will Katz (Seattle, WA/Garfield) and Bo Braun (Nutley, NJ/Nutley) finished eighth in the 1,600-meter relay with a time of 3:31.62.

On Friday, sophomore Chris Shaw (Anderson, IN/Pendleton Heights) broke a 40-year old Earlham record in the discus with a throw of 167’1” to finish in third place. The old mark of 160’5” was set by Mike Brown in 1968. First-year Chad Wertman (Holland, IN/Southridge) was the other Earlham competitor to score with a fifth-place finish in the shot put with a throw of 46’11¾.”

As a team, the Quakers finished 14th of 23 squads. Indiana Wesleyan won the meet with the University of Indianapolis finishing second.

The Earlham Invitational is next Saturday at Darrell Beane Stadium. The annual meet gets underway at 11 a.m.
