More about Track and Field

Track and field has had quite a history at Earlham since the College's first intercollegiate dual meet in 1897. In 1922, Charles Ivey sprinted the 110 hurdles in 14.8 seconds. Tom Marvel posted a 400-meter time of 49.5 seconds in 1957. Both these performances remain school records.

In a move to affiliate itself with other colleges with like academic philosophies, Earlham joined the NCAC in the summer of 1989. Individuals from several conference teams annually compete at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Championships.

Combining the best in athletics and academics, Troy Gottfried was a 1998 recipient of the NCAC Scholar-Athlete Award in recognition as Earlham's outstanding senior male student-athlete. He also earned the 1998 George Van Dyke Award as the Quakers' outstanding senior male athlete. He compiled a 3.71 grade-point average as a biology major and was a four-year letterwinner in both cross country and track. A member of Earlham's North Coast Athletic Conference championship cross country teams in 1995 and 1996, Gottfried earned individual all-conference honors seven times. They included first-team awards in cross country twice, and in outdoor track once.

Belonging to the NCAA Division III, Earlham offers academic scholarships to qualifying students as well as need-based financial aid.
