2004-05 Season Preview

Oct. 20, 2004
RICHMOND, Ind. —
Liana Coutts, who is returning to the North Coast Athletic Conference, begins her first season at Earlham after serving two years as the head coach at the Columbus School for Girls in Ohio.

Coutts led Ohio Wesleyan to a NCAC tournament championship and a Sweet 16 appearance in the NCAA Division III tournament in 2001-02 with a 21-8 record.

This season, Coutts has a squad that lost all five starters from a year ago. The Quakers, however, welcome back seven letterwinners from last year's 9-16 team that was sixth in the NCAC.

"The team is showing a lot of enthusiasm and working hard during the pre-season," Coutts said. "Because of the graduation of five starters, we are looking for the returning players to step up to the opportunity. In addition, we expect the newcomers to step in and mix it up."

Sophomore Guin Summerton (Williams, IN/Shoals) (6.3 ppg) is the top scorer back. Other returning players are juniors Kari Wilder-Romans (Ann Arbor, MI/Pioneer), Ajia Coleman (Stone Mountain, GA/Maple Heights, OH), Lauren Herrmann (Bloomington, IN/North), Maura Cosgrove (El Paso, TX/Sylvia Magnet) and senior Ani Hanelius (Dripping Springs, TX/Austin Waldorf). Sophomore Cassie Byrd (Bloomington, IN/North) also returns.

The new players for the Quakers this season are seniors Marike Stanitzke (Hamburg, Germany/White Mountain) and Kailynn Kataji (Gilroy, CA/Gilroy). The first-year players are Samantha Lurie (Lansing, MI/J.W. Sexton), Janny Concha (Arequipa, Peru), Whitney McBurrows (Lansing, MI/J.W. Sexton), Chelsea Caywood (Richmond, IN/Richmond), Sara Prince (Indianapolis, IN/Scecina) and Jessica Whitaker (Indianapolis, IN/Scecina).

The Quakers open the season Nov. 19-20 at the Centre College Tournament.

"We will be taking on some tough competition with our non-conference schedule," Coutts said.

Coutts also expects her return to the NCAC to be tough.

"The NCAC is a very good conference full of talented coaches and players," she said.

More about women's basketball

In a move to affiliate itself with other colleges with like academic philosophies, Earlham joined the North Coast Athletic Conference in 1989.

While participants in the Quaker women's basketball program take their athletic commitment seriously, they are counseled to give academics top priority. Lara Singer received NCAC Scholar Athlete honors in recognition of being named Earlham's outstanding senior female student-athlete. In the classroom, the psychology major compiled a 3.59 grade-point average. On the court, she proved to be the most dominant rebounder in Earlham women's basketball history. Singer owns all of the Quakers' rebounding records with 785 in a career, 252 in a single-season, and 23 in a game. She also ranks fifth in Earlham career scoring with 995 points.

Belonging to the NCAA Division III, Earlham offers academic scholarships to qualifying students as well as need-based financial aid. For more information, contact head women's basketball coach Liana Coutts at 765/983-1486, or by e-mail at couttli@earlham.edu.
