RICHMOND,
Ind. — The Earlham College women’s
basketball team faced an experienced Allegheny College
squad Saturday afternoon on Schuckman Court in the Athletics
and Wellness Center as the Quakers fell short of a second
straight win.
Allegheny defeated the Quakers 88-52 in
a North Coast Athletic Conference contest. “They just played very confidently,” Earlham
coach Liana Coutts said of the Gators (7-7, 3-2). “Basketball
is a game of runs and momentum. That’s one of the area
that we keep trying to bring attention to. They understand
momentum a lot with their experience.”
Sophomore Chelsea Caywood (Richmond, IN/Richmond)
led the Quakers with 14 points and nine rebounds. “She did a
heck of a job on the boards for us and that’s an area
we’ve needed to really work on,” Coutts said.
First-year Tasha Merrill (Cedar Grove,
IN/Franklin County) added nine points and seven rebounds,
while first-year LeShea
Orr (Dayton, OH/Jefferson) also grabbed seven rebounds. “There
were flashes of highlight types of plays, but our goal is that
we have to put 40 minutes together,” Coutts said.
Allegheny built an early advantage in
the first half as the Gators led 41-27 at intermission. The
Quakers didn’t
get any closer in the second half.
Earlham (3-10, 2-3) entertains
Wittenberg University on Wednesday. The NCAC game begins
at 7:30 p.m. Box score.
