RICHMOND,
Ind. — The Earlham College women’s
basketball team had five players in double figures Saturday
as the Quakers finished the regular season with an 88-66
victory over Oberlin College on Schuckman Court in the
Athletics and Wellness Center.
The Quakers advance to the North
Coast Athletic Conference Tournament as the seventh seed
and travel to Allegheny College
(17-8, 13-3) on Tuesday. “They’re physical and
they have a lot of bodies,” Earlham coach Liana Coutts
said of the second seeded Gators. “We weren’t in
the tournament last year and we made it this year, so we’re
very happy about that.”
The quintet in double digits for the Quakers
(5-20, 4-12) also had Coutts smiling. “That is fabulous,” she
said. “I am very happy for the players. They’ve
worked so hard and I was glad to see them be in a situation
to be able to pull everything together.”
Sophomore Samantha Lurie (Lansing, MI/J.
W. Sexton) led the way with 17 points and six assists for
the Quakers. First-year
Janee’ Covington (Indianapolis, IN/Arlington) tossed
in 15 points, while sophomore Whitney McBurrows (Lansing, MI/J.
W. Sexton) had 14.
Sophomore Chelsea Caywood (Richmond, IN/Richmond) added 13
points and led the Quakers with eight rebounds. Junior Guin
Summerton (Williams, IN/Shoals) had 10 points. First-year Tasha
Merrill (Cedar Grove, IN/Franklin County) finished with nine
points.
In her final contest at home, senior Lauren Herrmann (Bloomington,
IN/North) contributed seven points.
Trailing 31-30 at halftime, the Quakers took command in the
second half with 58 points, while making 20-of-36 shots (55.6
percent).
Earlham began the second half with
11 straight points to lead 41-31 with 17:09 left. Oberlin scored
its first basket of the
second stanza to break the run and make it 41-33, but the Yeowomen
couldn’t get any closer than that the rest of the way.
The largest margin for the Quakers was 79-54 at the 4:52 mark. Box
score.
