MEADVILLE,
Pa. — The
season came to an end for the Earlham College women’s
basketball team on Tuesday night as the Quakers competed in
the opening round of the North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament.
Allegheny College defeated the Quakers
89-72 in what was a tight contest into the second half. “Everybody made significant
contributions and we stepped up and handled their pressure
extremely well,” Earlham coach Liana Coutts said. “I'm
sure they were nervous when we cut their lead to five. I couldn't
be more proud of the tenacity our players exhibited.”
First-year Janee’ Covington
(Indianapolis, IN/Arlington) led Earlham with 23 points, while
sophomore
Chelsea Caywood
(Richmond, IN/Richmond) tossed in 18 points and pulled down
seven rebounds. Sophomore Whitney McBurrows (Lansing, MI/J.W.
Sexton)
contributed
12
points, seven rebounds and five assists. Junior Guin Summerton
(Williams,
IN/Shoals) added 11 points off the bench.
The score was tied 9-9 at the 17:21 mark of the first half
before Allegheny pushed its advantage to 15 points as the second
seeded Gators led 48-35 at intermission.
In the second period the seventh seeded
Quakers (5-21) rallied after the Gators score the first three
points of the half to
lead 51-38. Caywood’s 3-pointer pulled Earlham to within
70-65 with 9:26 remaining, but the Quakers could not get any
closer after that as Allegheny (18-8) put the game away to
advance the NCAC semifinals on Friday. Box
score.
