Quakers start season at Anderson

ANDERSON,
Ind. — The
Earlham College women’s basketball team opened
its season on Friday night at the Anderson University
Tournament with 63-59 loss to the host Ravens in O.C.
Lewis Gymnasium.
Junior Guin Summerton (Williams,
IN/Shoals) led the Quakers with 16 points and three
assists and first-year
Tasha Merrill (Cedar Grove, IN/Franklin County) added
15 points and 11 rebounds. Sophomore Chelsea Caywood
(Richmond, IN/Richmond) pulled down 13 rebounds to lead
Earlham, while scoring eight points. “We did a
lot of good things,” Earlham head coach Liana Coutts
said. “It was a very successful outing for us.
We had tons of improvement at every position since our
scrimmages.”
Both teams led several times in the first half with
the Quakers holding a 15-14 advantage until Anderson
went in front to stay 16-15 with 9:07 remaining. Anderson
led 30-23 at intermission.
In the second half, Earlham closed
the gap to 41-39 when Summerton nailed a 3-pointer
at the 10:44 mark.
The Ravens, however, countered with a 3-pointer and the
Quakers couldn’t get any closer.
Earlham had a 42-39 edge in rebounding and made 24 of
62 shots (38.7 percent). The Quakers were also four of
10 behind the 3-point arch with Summerton hitting four
of those long-range bombs in seven attempts.
The Quakers (0-1) play Tri-State
University on Saturday at 1 p.m. in the consolation round.
Tri-State was defeated
by Dubuque University in the second contest on Friday
night. The Ravens play Dubuque in the championship game
at 3 p.m. Box score.
