ANDERSON, Ind. — The Earlham College women’s basketball team opened its season on Friday night at the Anderson University Tournament with 63-59 loss to the host Ravens in O.C. Lewis Gymnasium.

Junior Guin Summerton (Williams, IN/Shoals) led the Quakers with 16 points and three assists and first-year Tasha Merrill (Cedar Grove, IN/Franklin County) added 15 points and 11 rebounds. Sophomore Chelsea Caywood (Richmond, IN/Richmond) pulled down 13 rebounds to lead Earlham, while scoring eight points. “We did a lot of good things,” Earlham head coach Liana Coutts said. “It was a very successful outing for us. We had tons of improvement at every position since our scrimmages.”

Both teams led several times in the first half with the Quakers holding a 15-14 advantage until Anderson went in front to stay 16-15 with 9:07 remaining. Anderson led 30-23 at intermission.

In the second half, Earlham closed the gap to 41-39 when Summerton nailed a 3-pointer at the 10:44 mark. The Ravens, however, countered with a 3-pointer and the Quakers couldn’t get any closer.

Earlham had a 42-39 edge in rebounding and made 24 of 62 shots (38.7 percent). The Quakers were also four of 10 behind the 3-point arch with Summerton hitting four of those long-range bombs in seven attempts.

The Quakers (0-1) play Tri-State University on Saturday at 1 p.m. in the consolation round. Tri-State was defeated by Dubuque University in the second contest on Friday night. The Ravens play Dubuque in the championship game at 3 p.m. Box score.
