Summerton makes all-tournament
team;
Quakers fall in consolation
game

ANDERSON,
Ind. — The Earlham College women’s
basketball team had three players in double figures
on Saturday as Tri-State University defeated the
Quakers 73-68 in the consolation round of the Anderson
University Tournament.
Sophomore Guin Summerton
(Williams, IN/Shoals) and first-year LeShea Orr (Dayton,
OH/Jefferson)
led the Quakers with
18 points each. “It was another close game and
we had some great performances,” Earlham head coach
Liana Coutts said. “It was a great weekend for
us in regards to learning.” Orr added 13 rebounds
and five blocks. Summerton was also a part of the all-tournament
squad for her 34-point performance over the two days.
First-year Janee’ Covington
(Indianapolis, IN/Arlington) added 15 points for Earlham,
while first-year Tasha Merrill
(Cedar Grove, IN/Franklin County) pulled down 11 rebounds.
Earlham led 40-35 at halftime and
with the exception of four ties, the Quakers were on
top for the entire
contest until Tri-State went in front for good 68-66
with 1:46 remaining. “We were ahead until the last
three minutes of the game and then they got the momentum,” Coutts
said.
The Quakers hit 30 of their 60 shots
and made seven of 16 attempts from behind the 3-point
line. “We
shot the ball really well, but we didn’t get to
the free throw line enough,” Coutts said. Tri-State
made 20 of 29 free throw attempts, while the Quakers
hit one of five free throws.
Earlham (0-2) is back
in action on Tuesday at St. Joseph’s
College. The non-conference contest begins at 7 p.m. Box score.
