ANDERSON, Ind. — The Earlham College women’s basketball team had three players in double figures on Saturday as Tri-State University defeated the Quakers 73-68 in the consolation round of the Anderson University Tournament.

Sophomore Guin Summerton (Williams, IN/Shoals) and first-year LeShea Orr (Dayton, OH/Jefferson) led the Quakers with 18 points each. “It was another close game and we had some great performances,” Earlham head coach Liana Coutts said. “It was a great weekend for us in regards to learning.” Orr added 13 rebounds and five blocks. Summerton was also a part of the all-tournament squad for her 34-point performance over the two days.

First-year Janee’ Covington (Indianapolis, IN/Arlington) added 15 points for Earlham, while first-year Tasha Merrill (Cedar Grove, IN/Franklin County) pulled down 11 rebounds.

Earlham led 40-35 at halftime and with the exception of four ties, the Quakers were on top for the entire contest until Tri-State went in front for good 68-66 with 1:46 remaining. “We were ahead until the last three minutes of the game and then they got the momentum,” Coutts said.

The Quakers hit 30 of their 60 shots and made seven of 16 attempts from behind the 3-point line. “We shot the ball really well, but we didn’t get to the free throw line enough,” Coutts said. Tri-State made 20 of 29 free throw attempts, while the Quakers hit one of five free throws.

Earlham (0-2) is back in action on Tuesday at St. Joseph’s College. The non-conference contest begins at 7 p.m. Box score.
