DELAWARE, Ohio — A sluggish beginning Wednesday night put the Earlham College women’s basketball team behind early as the Quakers couldn’t recover in a 74-40 decision at Ohio Wesleyan University.
The Bishops (13-7, 8-3) scored seven points of the North Coast Athletic Conference contest before sophomore Tasha Merrill (Cedar Grove, IN/Franklin County) made it 7-2 with 15:40 left in the opening period.
First-year Starr Gary (Indianapolis, IN/Northwest) added another basket to make 7-4 at the 12:34 mark, but Ohio Wesleyan scored the next 12 points to go in front 19-4 with 9:37 remaining in the first half. By intermission, the Bishops had a 31-14 advantage.
Gary had the initial basket of the second half, but the Bishops put the game away with 10 straight points to lead 41-16 with 17:15 left.
First-year Shontavia Davis (Indianapolis, IN/Warren Central) led Earlham with 16 points, while Merrill finished with six points.
Gary and junior Lisa Vanderkolk (Bluffton, IN/Bluffton) added five points each, while Vanderkolk led the Quakers with seven rebounds.
Earlham (3-17, 2-9) has a double weekend at home starting Friday night with Allegheny College at 6 p.m. On Saturday, the Quakers welcome Hiram College to Schuckman Court in the Athletics and Wellness Center. The NCAC game is at 2 p.m. Box Score.
