KALAMAZOO, Mich. — The Earlham College women’s basketball team had three players in double figures on Tuesday night as the Quakers lost 65-56 to Kalamazoo College.
Sophomore Tasha Merrill (Cedar Grove, IN/Franklin County) scored 17 points and eight rebounds to lead the Quakers, while junior Whitney McBurrows (Lansing, MI/J.W. Sexton) added 15 points. Senior Casie Byrd (Bloomington, IN/ North) tossed in 10 points.
The game was tight early with the Quakers leading 13-11 after Merrill hit a jumper in the paint. Kalamazoo responded to take a 30-23 lead by intermission.
In the second half, Merrill cut Kalamazoo’s advantage to 40-36 with a 3-pointer at the 11:27 mark. Kalamazoo built its lead to 47-36 with 7:59 remaining.
Earlham battled back into the contest to close the gap to 59-55 left when junior Samantha Lurie (Lansing, MI/J.W. Sexton) scored with 42 seconds left. Kalamazoo ended with a 6-1 run to put the game away.
The Quakers (0-3) entertain Mount St. Joseph on Saturday. The non-conference contest begins at 3 p.m. Box Score.
