WOOSTER, Ohio — The Earlham College women’s basketball team played a contest decided in the final minute on Saturday, unfortunately for the Quakers they finished on the wrong end of a 56-54 score at the College of Wooster.
Wooster able to hold off the Quakers in the final moments after Scots scored the go ahead basket with 57 seconds remaining in the North Coast Athletic Conference opener for each squad.
Down by two points, Earlham had several chances to tie the contest in the last minute, but the Quakers came up short.
Junior Whitney McBurrows (Lansing, MI/ J.W. Sexton) led the Quakers with 16 points. Junior Lisa Vanderkolk (Bluffton, IN/ Bluffton) and sophomore Tasha Merrill (Cedar Grove, IN/ Franklin County) added 10 points each, while Merrill pulled down a team-high six rebounds.
Earlham scored the first six points of the contest, but Wooster came back to tie the game 6-6 with 15:55 left in the first half. With 5:00 remaining in the opening period the game was tied again at 20-20 before the Scots finished the half with a 12-3 run to lead 32-23 at intermission.
In the second half, the game continued to be close with the scored tied five times in the period for a total of nine for the contest. The final time was 54-54 when Merrill hit a pair of free throws with 1:06 left.
The Quakers (0-5, 0-1) return to action Wednesday at Denison University. The NCAC game begins at 7 p.m. Box Score.
