GRANVILLE, Ohio — The Earlham College women’s basketball team dropped its second straight North Coast Athletic Conference contest on Wednesday night with a 79-44 loss at Denison University.
Denison jumped out to a 10-0 advantage with 15:22 gone in the first half before the Quakers battled back. Junior Samantha Lurie (Lansing, MI/ J.W.Sexton) made it 18-13 with a conventional 3-point play at the 10:35 mark after nailing her free throw.
Later in the opening period, sophomore Tracy Hill (Copley, OH/ Cuyahoga Valley Christian) scored to close the gap to 25-21 with 6:49 remaining in the first stanza. From that point on, however, Denison (5-3, 1-0) took command with a 16-3 run to finish the half to go in front 41-24 at intermission.
The Big Red outscored Earlham 38-20 in the second half to put the game away.
Junior Whitney McBurrows (Lansing, MI/ J.W. Sexton) led the Quakers with 10 points, while Lurie added seven points, five rebounds and three assists. First-year Starr Gary (Indianapolis, IN/ Northwest) pulled down a game-high seven rebounds.
The Quakers (0-6, 0-2) are back in action at home on Saturday against Kenyon College. The NCAC game on Schuckman Court in the Athletics and Wellness Center is at 1 p.m.
