RICHMOND, Ind. — A 17-7 run midway through the second half Saturday helped the Earlham College women’s basketball team to a 64-55 win over Kenyon College on Schuckman Court in the Athletics and Wellness Center.
The North Coast Athletic Conference victory was the first of the season for the Quakers. “It was a great win for us,” Earlham Head Coach Liana Coutts said. “We were able to pull some things together. Everybody stepped up. It was truly a team win.”
The contest was tied 23-23 at halftime and Kenyon eventually led 30-29 at the 16:12 mark of the second period as the Quakers started their decisive run that ended with senior Casie Byrd (Bloomington, IN/North) scoring to make it 46-37 with 9:04 remaining.
From that point, Kenyon (2-5, 0-2) could get no closer than four points with the last time coming at the 2:04 mark when Earlham led 54-50.
Byrd led Earlham with 14 points as the Quakers had three others reach double figures. First-year Shontavia Davis (Indianapolis, IN/Warren Central) had 13 points, while Junior Lisa Vanderkolk (Bluffton, IN/Bluffton) added 12. Junior Whitney McBurrows (Lansing, MI/J.W. Sexton) had 11 points.
First-year Jayana Sims (Indianapolis, IN/Ben Davis) had game-highs with seven rebounds and four assists.
The Quakers (1-6, 1-2) are back on the court this weekend in the three-team Rose-Hulman Classic with Robert Morris-Springfield pulling out of the event forcing a schedule change. Earlham now faces Rose-Hulman on Friday at 7 p.m. The Quakers then play Marian College on Saturday at 1 p.m. Box Score.
