TERRE HAUTE, Ind. — The Earlham College women’s basketball team opened the Rose-Hulman Invitational on Friday with a 67-51 loss to Rose-Hulman.
First-year Starr Gary (Indianapolis, IN/Northwest) led the Quakers with nine points and six rebounds. Junior Lisa Vanderkolk (Bluffton, IN/Bluffton) also pulled down six rebounds.
Junior Samantha Lurie (Lansing, MI/J.W. Sexton) and sophomore Tasha Merrill (Cedar Grove, IN/Franklin County) added eight points each.
Rose-Hulman started the game with a 6-1 run before the Quakers fought back. Merrill’s basket in the paint tied the contest at 14-14 with 9:44 left in the first half.
The Engineers scored the next 13 points to take control of the contest finishing the half with a 23-7 run to hold a 37-21 advantage at intermission.
In the second half, Earlham battled with the Engineers (9-1) as each team scored 30 points, but the Quakers could get no closer than 11 points times with the last coming at 16:53 after a basket by first-year Jayana Sims (Indianapolis, IN/Ben Davis).
Sims and first-year Shontavia Davis (Indianapolis, IN/Warren Central) finished with six points apiece.
The Quakers (1-7) play Marian College Saturday during the second day of the three-team Rose-Hulman Invitational at 1 p.m. Robert Morris-Springfield pulled out of the event forcing a schedule change. Box Score.
