TERRE HAUTE, Ind. — The Earlham College women’s basketball team finished its portion of the Rose-Hulman Invitational with an 84-56 loss to Marian College on Saturday afternoon.
Junior Samantha Lurie (Lansing, MI/J.W. Sexton) led the Quakers with 16 points, while first-year Shontavia Davis (Indianapolis, IN/Warren Central) tossed in 13.
Sophomore Tasha Merrill (Cedar Grove, IN/Franklin County) finished with nine points and four rebounds and classmate Tracy Hill (Copley, OH/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) added seven points and four rebounds.
First-year Starr Gary (Indianapolis, IN/Northwest) led Earlham with seven rebounds.
After Lurie scored the game’s first basket, Marian scored the next 14 points to gain control of the contest by the 14:21 mark of the opening half. The Quakers responded with the 9-0 run of their own to close the gap to 14-11 with 11:10 to go.
A pair of free throws by Davis made it 16-13 with 9:47 left before Marian scored nine straight points to lead 25-13 at 7:38. Marian (6-6) eventually led 39-22 at the break.
In the second half, the Quakers could get no closer than 39-25 with 18:04 remaining as the Knights pulled away.
The Quakers (1-8) play against St. Mary-of-the-Woods College on Tuesday. The game at the old Clinton High School begins at 7 p.m. Directions to the old Clinton High School Gymnasium. Box Score.
